Put your best foot forward during stays at Oakdean Cottage, 15 minutes’ stroll from Blakeney and with direct access to the Forest of Dean’s walking trails. Roam to your heart’s content, then relax in your rented space: stays here are in a Mongolian yurt made cosy with yak’s wool insulation and a custom-made woodburner. The comfort continues with a double bed and a double sofa bed (handy if the kids are kicking back with you), and there's a clutch of battery- and solar-powered lanterns and fairy lights provided for a bit of ambient sparkle. The outside of the yurt is just as pretty: it’s built into a steep bank in a quiet and secluded corner of the garden, with five plum trees for neighbours (make sure to pick a few for fruity snacks during your hol). And as for other sustenance? Make meals in the kitchenette, which comes with a kettle, toaster, fridge, cutlery and crockery, or on the alfresco campfire grill, then tuck in at the picnic bench in the covered outdoor eating area. If cooking isn’t part of the plan, there’s a pub in Blakeney dishing up Sunday roasts and pizzas, as well as a café serving food and cakes. A shower room with hot running water and a flushing loo is a short 20-metre wander from the yurt.

Local attractions

Make it your mission to explore as much of the Forest of Dean as possible when at this park – there’s direct access on foot from the site to the area’s leafy trails. Wander to Bradley Hill for green vistas (15 minutes’ walk) or look out across a carpet of trees (40 minutes) from Blaize Bailey. If you’ve done all that and are ready to drive, travel 10 minutes to the Go Ape Forest of Dean adventure course for some ziplining action, then mosey over to the local sculpture trail in search of art (15 minutes). If driving is less than preferable, see the local landscape while chugging along on the Dean Forest Railway (10 minutes) and the Perrygrove Railway (20 minutes) instead. Hankering after a bit more adventure? Go underground at the Clearwell Caves (20 minutes), glide over to the River Wye for kayaking, canoeing and wild swimming (25 minutes), then calm yourself down with relaxed roams in the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo (half an hour).
