  • Family-run farm site with Severn views in Arlingham, Gloucestershire
  • Thames and Severn Canal 10 minutes’ drive; WWT Slimbridge 20 minutes
  • Level grass pitches with electric hook-ups; 10 minutes’ walk to pubs
A peaceful rural retreat tucked into a meander on the River Severn, a well-stocked, coarse fishing lake and footpaths leading from the camping field to the Severn Way walking route. What else could you want from a Gloucester getaway? Ah yes – there’s more. Passage Farm Caravan and Campsite is 10 minutes’ walk from the village of Arlingham, where there are a couple of great pubs and a cracking seafood restaurant. Spacious, level and well-drained pitches – each served by electric hook-ups and water – overlook open fields on a small, family-run arable farm. On-site facilities include a toilet block with hot water (but no showers), recycling points and decent TV reception (if you feel like having a lazy day). Surprisingly – as it is so quiet – the site is just 20 minutes’ drive from junction 13 of M5. Access is down a country lane with easing passing places, and the entrance is nice and wide for pulling in. Pitches are limited in number so there’s masses of space for kids and dogs to run around, while rare-breed Gloucester cows graze neighbouring fields and free-range chickens peck around at will. The river is a couple of minutes’ stroll away, where you can sometimes catch the Severn Bore coming up the river – and on clear nights, gather everyone up around your firepit (available on request), lie back and watch the stars glimmering far, far above.

Local attractions

You’re really rather spoilt for choice when staying at Passage Farm. Fancy getting out on the water? Have a potter down the Thames and Severn Canal (10 minutes’ drive) by barge and test your balance on a paddleboard, or set out from Gloucester Docks (half an hour) by cruise boat for a tour of the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. Prefer to explore on foot? Join the Severn Way and hike along the river bends from Arlingham (10 minutes). Happy to abandon the car altogether? There’s a daily bus service to Gloucester (35 minutes) from the village, so you can have a nose round the cathedral to spot the Harry Potter film locations, browse the indie shops at Gloucester Quays, see vintage planes at the Jet Age Museum or explore the city on a ghoulish guided ghost tour. Kids with you? Head to WWT Slimbridge to see the handsome Bewick’s swans, or take youngsters to meet the cute alpacas and calves at Cattle Country Farm Park (both 20 minutes), where they can also let off steam in the play park, climb rope courses and race around the go-kart track.
