  • Gloucester Cathedral 25 minutes’ drive; Sudeley Castle 35 minutes
  • Private garden with orchard and pond; woodfired hot tub and sauna
More tiny house than pod, Orchard View Igluhut (it’s come all the way from Estonia, no less) at The Coach House, five minutes’ drive from medieval Tewkesbury, is a comfortable and cosy adults-only sanctuary for couples looking for luxury and peace in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds. The light-filled cabin is fully insulated and heated to keep you both snug on cooler evenings or in winter. A fully equipped kitchen corner comes with everything supplied for making simple suppers, and a compact dining area leads on to the bedroom, with luxury Egyptian cotton linen on the king-size bed. Other mod cons include a pristine bathroom with walk-in shower (there’s complimentary toiletries and a hairdryer in there too), an iron and ironing board, and a flatscreen TV with streaming apps so you can catch up with your favourite programmes. Lots of little designer touches add character to this cute and colourful space. And outside, Orchard View is just as good as inside. Chill in the rocking chairs on the decking, set yourself up with a good book (outdoor games are supplied as well) in your quarter-acre private orchard and keep an eye open for wildlife around the pond. If you need some TLC, lie back in the woodfired sauna (logs supplied), or spark up the exclusive-use hot tub, jump in and watch the starry skies on cloudless nights. While you’re having a quiet nocturnal moment in the tub, badgers, bats, owls, hedgehogs or foxes may put in an appearance. By day, you’ll certainly see the rescue hens in the paddocks – and you can enjoy a complimentary half-dozen of their eggs during your stay. Pre-order services like fridge fills, hampers and barbecue packs are also available.

Local attractions

The market town of Tewkesbury (five minutes’ drive) has plenty of antique shops to potter around, peaceful walks alongside the rivers Severn and Avon, and a magnificent abbey known for its colourful stained-glass windows. For more architectural grandeur, head to Gloucester Cathedral (25 minutes) to tour the ornate vaulted nave, climb the tower and admire the 15th-century library. Committed history devotees can also stroll the formal gardens and see royal tombs of Sudeley Castle (35 minutes), or spot the ornate mosaic flooring at Spoonley Wood Roman Villa (40 minutes) – be prepared for a walk through woodland to find it though. Coming a little further up to date, the Jet Age Museum (20 minutes) has displays of vintage aircraft and cockpit tours – a handy place if you need a rainy-day activity. When you’d rather be doing your exploring on foot or by bike, follow sections of the long-distance Cotswolds Way to follies like Broadway Tower (35 minutes), or climb up Cleeve Hill (25 minutes) for views to the Malverns and right into Wales.
