What customers say

This is a basic, no-frills site, often described as a stopover. Guests highlight its peaceful atmosphere, proximity to Lydney town and harbour, and opportunities for wildlife spotting. While some found the facilities clean and adequate, others were dissatisfied with the site's industrial location, appearance, and basic amenities, with a few leaving upon arrival. Positive comments often focus on friendly owners and value for money.

Electric optional motorhome pitch

Liked Quirky place with some long-term residents in situ, who were friendly and polite. Parking is on the old quayside and is pretty flat. There is a single toilet with wash basin in a cubicle. Great walk down to the Severn to the historic dock, which is about a 2 mile round trip. Good stopover for 20 quid with ehu and a very quiet location.

Electric optional motorhome pitch

Liked Location. Easy Saturday morning walk to Lydney Boating Lake for parkrun, our reason for visiting Lydney.
Ideal for a one night stop-over.
Conversation over the phone with staff member was very helpful (never met face to face. Send text on arrival and they will call back)

Disliked Scruffy and tired appearance. Many scrap vehicles parked adjacent to entrance and an old trailer restricting access to the 'one' site toilet.
With a little bit of effort this small site could be quite attractive.

Electric optional motorhome pitch

Liked Nothing

Disliked took one look at this and left.. its sited on an industrial estate, miles from anywhere, behind a car breakers, difficult to find and get too, and the site looked like part of the breakers yard, with old caravans and old broken vehicles everywhere. The lake was small and pretty much stagnant, and the actual site small and covered in astro turf.

Electric optional motorhome pitch

Liked Straightforward arrangements, quiet location, close to train station, easy walk into town for supermarkets, etc. (20 minutes). Basic no frills facilities including flushing toilet, water tap, and sheltered (outdoor) laundry facilities.

Disliked Situated as it is on the edge of an industrial estate, there might be an impression of some dereliction in the immediate vicinity which may not be comfortable for all, especially as it is very dark at night.

Electric optional motorhome pitch

Liked Very basic site just what you need when you want to get away and see the stars. Nice easy walk to lydney harbour, very friendly owners. Waste disposal, nice toilet and very pretty view with the water and wildlife. Will definitely stay again if they'll have me.

Disliked Nothing to dislike, its a basic site.... probably explains the name basecamp!

Local attractions

Find out more about the local area by jumping on the heritage steam train at Norchard Station (10 minutes’ drive) for a chug through the Forest of Dean, and then having a potter around the reconstructed cottages and workshops at the riverside Dean Heritage Centre (15 minutes). You can also follow the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail (20 minutes) to spot multicoloured glass sculptures among the trees. Access the forest itself directly from the site, and if you’re mad-keen on walking and cycling, the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes) offers you routes to Tintern Abbey (25 minutes), as well as canoeing and canyoning adventures on the river for the more intrepid among you. You can also use Lydney as a base to explore ancient Welsh castles: the landmark Chepstow Castle (15 minutes) offers spectacular views over the River Severn, while Norman-era Caldicot Castle has acres of landscaped grounds to discover, and Raglan (45 minutes) has an informative visitor centre.
