Marina Base Camp: Visitor image of the view of the site

General

  • Motorhome site adjacent to Lydney Harbour in the Forest of Dean
  • A 20-minute drive to the Wye Valley, and 25 minutes to Gloucester
  • Basic site with canalside pitches; pubs, shops and boats nearby

One for lovers of all things nautical, Marina Base Camp is a simple motorhome site adjacent to Lydney Docks in Gloucestershire’s Forest of Dean. It’s located in Lydney’s working marina, and pitches all have peaceful views over the canal, where you mght get to see ducks, swans and kingfishers.

Directly behind the campsite is the River Severn and the Bristol Channel estuary, lined with public footpaths with clear views of the stately Severn bridges. You can also have a potter around Lydney Harbour, where boats are moored up waiting to pass through the sea lock, or follow trails directly from the site, leading through the Forest of Dean on foot or on two wheels.

If you need to replenish supplies, there’s a supermarket in Lydney. For a change of scenery, there’s a café down by the harbour, and a couple of teashops and local pubs in the town itself, with a bigger choice in Cinderford (20 minutes’ drive), where you can often find live music in the evenings too.

A speedy train service from Lydney station (five minutes’ walk) gives you fast and direct connections to Cardiff and Newport in Wales, Gloucester with its Georgian docks, and the spa town of Cheltenham if you fancy a fly trip further afield.

A yard with a loo04/05/2023

    Disliked:

You access this yard via a “working” garage full of old vehicles and projects. I was greeted by the man attempting to repair a portable shower which clearly had never worked who told me where thing are, and then set off for a weekend away. The portaloo style toilet was ok, and had hot water, for a sink that was tiny. The “site” itself consisted of 5 or 6 “pitches” on gravel covered in the remains of old rotting astroturf making it look green but which also left bobbles of black rubber everywhere. My camper was full of this poppy seed. The chemical disposal was unsafe and a health and safety hazard. The clean water standpipe and hose was filthy. There are cables everywhere. Everything felt dry “steptoe”. I had booked to stay for 3 nights in advance whilst my better half attended a reunion. I stayed the one night, and went elsewhere. £15 a night for this was a joke. Would I stay again? Never.

From the manager...

Well my name is Richard , I met this customer all seemed ok . No complaints .
Let's out a few things straight .
Accomodation 2/10 he drove it here . His choice of Vehicles .
Location . My advice double check your Google map if your unsure of the location.
Our inscription clearly says we are adjacent to a workshop. .
As for the shower that clearly has never worked I thank him for his advice , maybe we should have taken him with us to purchase it ..
Asto sports turf yes second hand but ultra expensive .
The standpipe water area wasn't filthy it was extremely. wet around the area due to the fact I was working on a shower
that clearly according to this expert had never worked .
Yes the facilities insight are basic that's why it was named Basecamp.
I would urge customers who are unsatisfied to at least voice their concern to either myself or the owner by telephone or email straight away.
Electric cables stretched out awaiting electrician to connect . All cables no hazard as not connected to any power supply.
Elsan disposal adequate.

The site was nice and quiet. The toilet facility was clean.

    Disliked:

Not very well sign posted from the road. There’s only one toilet available. Not much room to manoeuvre a van or motorhome.

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments, we have widened the turning space to aid the manoeuvring to the pitches.
Kind regards Marika

Nice spot, loved the walk down to the harbour and a cup of tea for just £1. 2 pubs with food nearby, and a medium sized Tesco. Waking up to swans and ducks on the door step was special. Nice clean toilet, fresh water to hand, electrics if asked for. Most important very flat pitch, so slept very comfortably.

Simple straightforward site with a nice view from the van - levelish pitch. I
Single toilet was clean and the heater appreciated. Personally I quite enjoyed finding my way through the cars being fixed on the way in but others might not. I also enjoyed the walk to Lydney Harbour with its rotting boats.
It was cheapish and was a handy stopover.

    Disliked:

I have a very basic van so the lack of a washing up point was an issue for me and the way of disposing of the washing up water - a hole in the ground with a piece of plywood over it - is perhaps a tad too rustic even for a basic site.
It was cheapish and a handy stopover for me but I won’t be back.
