  • Motorhome site adjacent to Lydney Harbour in the Forest of Dean
  • A 20-minute drive to the Wye Valley, and 25 minutes to Gloucester
  • Basic site with canalside pitches; pubs, shops and boats nearby
One for lovers of all things nautical, Marina Base Camp is a simple motorhome site adjacent to Lydney Docks in Gloucestershire’s Forest of Dean. It’s located in Lydney’s working marina, and pitches all have peaceful views over the canal, where you mght get to see ducks, swans and kingfishers. Directly behind the campsite is the River Severn and the Bristol Channel estuary, lined with public footpaths with clear views of the stately Severn bridges. You can also have a potter around Lydney Harbour, where boats are moored up waiting to pass through the sea lock, or follow trails directly from the site, leading through the Forest of Dean on foot or on two wheels. If you need to replenish supplies, there’s a supermarket in Lydney. For a change of scenery, there’s a café down by the harbour, and a couple of teashops and local pubs in the town itself, with a bigger choice in Cinderford (20 minutes’ drive), where you can often find live music in the evenings too. A speedy train service from Lydney station (five minutes’ walk) gives you fast and direct connections to Cardiff and Newport in Wales, Gloucester with its Georgian docks, and the spa town of Cheltenham if you fancy a fly trip further afield.

Non-electric tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Didn’t get to find out

Disliked: We arrived with our Motorhome to find there was no space for us. We parked where we were told. Within minutes told to move very close to water. Then a small van wanted to leave site, which struggled to exit. At that point we left. No where for us to turn so had to reverse past parked vehicles. It was nothing like the pictures on pitch up. Would not recommend at all We paid to stay for 3 nights. No money refunded. Units and commercial vehicles all packed in a small space with no thought given to safety.

From the manager: Dear customer. We are sorry to hear that you were not satisfied. You have failed to specify that you motorhome is over 8 m and to book as a large unit. You could have done so in the emails, phone calls that we have had prior to your arrival. When you arrived with your large unit and the bike rack on the back you have parked on the angle thus blocking the access, that is why you were asked to move. The pitch allocated to you is next to the Lydney Canal and yes this pitch is 6feet from the water if you felt uncomfortable with the distance to the water then you should have turned around and face the other way. I have offered you help, I have asked staff members to assist you, I have asked our customers to move their vehicles for you - you have said that you would rather sleep somewhere in the layby. Our refund policy states no refunds within 24 hours. Despite this, I have refunded money for all three days that you have booked minus Pitch up fee and the cards fees. We are a small site along a canal and the site is shaped accordingly. We are basic site and I do not proport to be any else on the website. This is reflected in our prices. Kind regards Marika Strnkova

Non-electric tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Ease of checking availability and ability to book online through Pitchup. Reasonably priced for what is on offer. Quiet site so slept well.

Disliked: Out on a limb. No mobile signal on Vodaphone. Three network reception weak but usable. Freeview signal not good enough to watch TV. Not the fault of the site owner - just giving a headsup!

Non-electric tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Relaxed, friendly atmosphere at a lovely setting next to the canal. We enjoyed the company of fellow campers. We walked into Lydney town for shopping and down to Lydney Harbour for an ice cream at the cafe. We even managed to catch a steam train from Lydney Junction going up into the Forest of Dean. Thanks too for the call to make sure we were settled and to give us some local info about things to do and see in the area. Facilities basic but clean.

Non-electric tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: The location of the site was good for us, we could walk to Lydney shops, Bathurst Park and the separate boating lake, the railway station, steam railway station and Lydney harbour. The site is as described in previous reviews and by the owner. Not a good approach onto the site but once there it is reasonless quiet and laid back. Value for money is great.

Disliked: The approach is through a working garage parking area. But as we read the information and reviews we were prepared for this.

Non-electric tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Lovely peaceful site with scenic view of the canal/river, friendly owner Richard. Close to town and a nice walk to Lydney harbour. Will definitely stay again.

Disliked: Bit tight getting a 7m van in but definitely doable. Just a note for some it's a £15/night spot don't expect an all singing and dancing site but those there are very clean

Local attractions

Find out more about the local area by jumping on the heritage steam train at Norchard Station (10 minutes’ drive) for a chug through the Forest of Dean, and then having a potter around the reconstructed cottages and workshops at the riverside Dean Heritage Centre (15 minutes). You can also follow the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail (20 minutes) to spot multicoloured glass sculptures among the trees. Access the forest itself directly from the site, and if you’re mad-keen on walking and cycling, the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes) offers you routes to Tintern Abbey (25 minutes), as well as canoeing and canyoning adventures on the river for the more intrepid among you. You can also use Lydney as a base to explore ancient Welsh castles: the landmark Chepstow Castle (15 minutes) offers spectacular views over the River Severn, while Norman-era Caldicot Castle has acres of landscaped grounds to discover, and Raglan (45 minutes) has an informative visitor centre.
