Based in the farmhouse at the bottom of the village, the farm is family run. We represent the third generation of Rightons - we first arrived here after the war as the house and its lands were reverting to the National Trust. Backed into trees at the foot of one of our grassy fields a walk up the hill from the tents takes you to 260 metres above sea level, and from here you can see nine counties on a clear day, with far-reaching views across the Vale of Evesham to the Malvern Hills and across the Cotswold Escarpment. The walking is fantastic as there are many footpaths that criss-cross the farm. The farm covers just under 300 acres – half arable, half pasture – where our 450 breeding sheep graze. Lambing takes place in late March and early April, when help is needed with bottle-feeding orphans. Our picturesque farm is managed with minimal chemical sprays and fertilisers and is a haven for wildlife, with bird plots planted which play host to skylarks, lapwings and various finches. There are several badger setts around the farm too, and their inhabitants can be seen in the summer evenings if you’re quiet enough! During the summer we also cultivate a giant maize maze over eight acres in size that is created to a different pattern each year. Unfortunately we can’t accommodate pets at Hidcote Manor because we farm sheep.

Local attractions

Lovers of the Cotswolds will want to flock here, as we are the first Feather Down farm in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Our tents are a stone’s throw from the honey-coloured limestone hamlet that clusters around Hidcote Manor. Described by the National Trust as one of England’s greatest gardens, it was created by the American Lawrence Johnston in the first half of the 20th century as a series of outdoor ‘rooms’ combining masses of colour with traditional crafts such as topiary. This is a first class base for your stay in the Cotswolds, with the small market town of Chipping Campden, home of the Arts and Crafts movement, just a four-mile footpath walk away, and Broadway, ‘the jewel of the Cotswolds’, a little further off by car. Both towns are considered to be in the top 10 prettiest high streets in England. There are famed gastropubs nearby too, in Ebrington and Bourton-on-the-Water, whilst the Bard and his works and the newly opened Royal Shakespeare Company theatre await you at Stratford-upon-Avon, eight miles away. Hidcote’s easy access from London and Birmingham – two and one hour’s drive respectively – makes us an easy choice for a long weekend away. With all we have at Hidcote Manor Farm, however, we think you’ll find it hard to leave – both during and at the end of your stay.
