Pods near the national star college

  • Small Gloucestershire glamping site in rural parkland near Cheltenham
  • Five minutes’ walk to the Cotswold Way, Cheltenham 20 minutes’ drive
  • Social enterprise for youngsters with disabilities; bistro on site
Set up as a social enterprise scheme to help young people with disabilities into work, Star Glamping is located in a lovely corner of rural Gloucestershire near Cheltenham. More specifically, the site is in the grounds of National Star College, and guests can play golf on the college course. Crafted from environmentally friendly and sustainable woods, the cute glamping pods have sheltered, bow-topped porches for chilling out and star-gazing on fine summer evenings, plus a private garden area where you can all cosy up around the firepit to enjoy a barbecue feast. Not into cooking al fresco? Simply head straight for Star Bistro to savour dishes prepared by the young chefs working there (Monday to Friday only). Inside each pod are various configurations of bed, and optional bedding sets are provided at an additional cost – all you need to remember is a supply of towels and a torch for getting around this off-grid spot after dark. Families or groups of friends can hire the whole site for special celebrations, and it’s also a handy stopover for walkers and their well-behaved dogs, five minutes’ walk from the Cotswold Way National Trail.

No 5 camping pod (two person)

Liked: Cabin was clean, BBQ from night before wasn't emptied or cleaned. Location was really quiet, exactly what we wanted. Good supply of cups, tea and coffee in the cabin. Toilets clean and stocked up.

Disliked: Bit confusing where to go, as site is a residential and pods aren't signposted. Family of 4 hogging both bathrooms on Saturday and Sunday and using firepit area until late with music on phone. So mainly others spoiling the site for you. Beds in the cabin for the price felt a bit off.

The Shire House microlodge

Liked: Lovely surroundings to walk . Nice and clean accommodation. Friendly staff

Disliked: Did not ike the rubber topped mattress . Very close to the road which is busy . Very awkward especially first thing when we woke up if you need the toilet and the two rooms are being used for showering . There needs to be separate toilets. 2 wet rooms for the 9 that can stay there is not enough . Darker blinds would also be nice as the ones there are sea through when the sun comes up .

No 2 camping pod (four person)

Liked: The staff, well the one staff member what we me on Friday was outstanding, cleanish toilets and shower blocks but could do with a the de-cobweb

Disliked: Pods 2 sleep 4 people, very very basic a kettle provided but yet no cups are also no water points what state it can be used apart from the bathroom sink, in the photos the pods look huge but realistically they are very very small, the fridge is placed on the bottom bunk, pods get very stuffy at night time, they do have a port hole window but if that person on the top bunk open the window it leaves very little room to sleep in the bed. tested our heater our in the early evening as it wasa bit cooler to find the stands are broken If you don’t like spiders then certainly don’t go, we had many in our pod but as of or the bathroom well just close your eyes and hope for the best

Local attractions

Fancy getting out into the great outdoors? Cyclists and walkers can head for the Cotswold Way (five minutes’ walk), follow the sculpture trails in the Forest of Dean and ramble through soft-stone Cotswolds villages like Broadway (both 35 minutes’ drive) or Bourton-on-the-Water (20 minutes). The kids will likely love you forever if you take them to Cotswold Farm Park (20 minutes) to cuddle donkeys and see rare-breed sheep as featured on TV, while you can chuff along a narrow-gauge mini-railway to spot rhinos and giraffes at Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens (half an hour). As well as all the rural goings-on, there are several interesting towns and cities to discover. The glampsite is midway between Gloucester, with its historic docks on the River Severn, and Regency-style Cheltenham (both 15 minutes), where you can cruise indie shops for cool clothes or book tickets for events at the year-round roster of literary and arts festivals. There’s some serious shopping to do at Designer Outlet Swindon (35 minutes) too, and the Roman ruins and Thermae Spa make Bath (an hour) a fascinating city in which to pass the day.
