  • Adults-only park a couple of minutes' drive from the M5
  • Use as an overnight stopover or as a base for Cheltenham or Gloucester
  • Landscaped with mature shrubs, hedges and trees
Apart from a possible pitch on a tower block in the middle of a city, Briarfields Touring Park might be the most ‘leave your car at home’ site we’ve seen yet. Ditch the diesel guzzler or leave the motorhome on site and hitch a ride on one of the regular buses that pass right outside, leading to days’ worth of days out at Cheltenham (two miles away), Gloucester (six miles), Oxford, the Forest of Dean and the Cotswolds. And if you’re getting around under your own steam, the friendly family team at Briarfields can pick you up from local public transport when you arrive. Even on your own feet you’ll reach most of what you need quickly from the park: a pub and a newsagent are within a few minutes’ walk; an Indian restaurant, KFC and supermarket less than 15 minutes – and a caravan sales and spares dealership is a mile and a half away, just in case. Although Briarfields is only a couple of minutes from the M5 (it’s often used by guests on their way north or south as an overnight stopover), it’s been rather cleverly designed so you can think you’re slap bang in the middle of the countryside: the landscaped and the accommodation areas are edged throughout with mature shrubs, hedges and trees. Amenities are equally well looked after: the centrally placed amenities block is cleaned twice a day and has free hot showers for ladies, gents and disabled guests. Swing into reception when you arrive at Briarfields for reams of info, leaflets and maps on the many (many) things to do a bus ride away: buses run every ten minutes during the day and every 20 minutes in the evening to both Cheltenham and Gloucester, and another service to Oxford will give explorers about six hours in the city before heading back to Cheltenham. Briarfields is open all year round and is dog-friendly.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: We are quite new to the motorhome scene but have visited quite a few parks , this one has the best toilet shower blocks we've been to , excellent. Pitch was a little bit noisy with traffic but understandable being next to a road ,it was a good size with room for dogs outside , I liked the design with hedges giving some privacy, all in all very good

Disliked: Having dogs the area around the park is not very dog friendly even though we did find a park

From the manager: Thank you for sharing such lovely feedback! We're delighted to hear that you found our toilet and shower block to be the best you've experienced so far - what a compliment! It's also great to know that you appreciated the spacious pitch and the hedges for privacy. We’re sorry to hear that the road noise was a bit noticeable, but we’re glad the space worked well for your dogs. Best Wishes, The Briarfields Team

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Bus service , very handy for Cheltenham & Gloucester. Clean facilities Clean site

Disliked: We felt the information provided by the site was somewhat misleading. When it promised walks from the site we didn’t expected them to be next to very busy main roads…. Very unpleasant to walk next to even though most had pavements. The nearest pub ( a Harvester) was situated on a roundabout and the ten minute walk to that was scary with very heavy traffic.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review and for highlighting the convenience of the bus service and the cleanliness of our facilities and site. We are very sorry to hear that you felt the local information was misleading and we appreciate the opportunity to clarify things. We provide a detailed local map to all our guests on arrival, outlining nearby amenities, all accessible via new footpaths, pedestrian walkways and even an underpass to safely reach the Harvester. As for country walks, we have some beautiful routes that take you out into the countryside, through open fields, away from the roads, which we're sorry you haven't experienced. Our team is available every day to answer any questions or advice you may have, and we are sorry that you did not contact us during your stay, because we could have provided useful advice. Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: site and pitches were excellent toilets and shower were very clean and hot staff were very friendly

Disliked: road noise all day and nights sirens on emergency vehicles a constant sound all day and then you've got the light aircraft overhead coming into land every 1/2 minutes. then unfortunately on the friday at around 3/3.30 a group of 4 camper vans arrived they set up in their pitches side by side and then all gathered on one pitch and sat around a large table drinking chatting and laughing loudly until 10.30

Local attractions

Well. Where do we start? At least a day in Cheltenham first, we think – more if you’re coming to have a flutter at the racecourse just four miles away or jazzing it up at one of the many festivals. Catch the bus early to take in as much as poss: a morning coveting the art, furniture, crafts and jewellery at Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum, many created by Cotswold craftspeople inspired by William Morris, should build up an appetite for lunch and an afternoon of shopping around The Brewery, Bath Road and in the well-lined High Street. Harry Potter fans and the history-inclined will likely want an hour or two at medieval Gloucester Cathedral, used in the first and second films (see if you recognise the Cloisters). Away from Hogwarts, the cathedral has an award-winning exhibition centre, exhibitions and guided tours, and regular events and concerts including The Three Choirs Festival, one of the oldest classical choral music festivals in the world. The Gloucester Docks and award-winning Waterways Museum is also a good afternoon out for heritage fans, while the more modern can find plenty to occupy them at the waterside retail park Gloucester Quays. Plunge into the countryside next for a couple of days in the Cotswolds, where you’ll find acres of things to do whatever your inclination such as punting around local villages like Chipping Camden and Bourton-on-the-Water, or visiting the many museums ranging from Roman to motoring times. Wildlife options abound too, particularly for birders, with the Cotswold Falconry Centre at the Batsford Arboretum, geese and swans at Slimbridge Wetland Centre, and Birdland Park and Gardens in Bourton-on-the-Water where twitchers can see rare birds from around the world, including England’s only group of king penguins. Finally, take a day or two in the ancient Forest of Dean (Harry Potter and co ended up here too), one of the oldest woodlands in the country, to go underground at the old mines of the Clearwell Caves, hire a bike to hit the forest tracks, or, more relaxingly, take the four and a half mile trip from Lydney to Parkend on the Dean Forest Railway.
