If you’ve set your heart on a Peak District National Park getaway, you really should take a look at Wheston Bank Campsite, a pop-up site standing on a hillside above the historic Derbyshire village of Tideswell and its soaring 14th-century church, nicknamed the ‘Cathedral of the Peak’. Easily accessed off a quiet country road, Wheston Bank covers two vast fields spread over three acres – all the pitches overlook the village, but some areas are flat while others are on a slope. Back-to-basics facilities include portable toilets in the fields, fresh tap water, a washing-up sink and bins for rubbish – that means no showers and no electricity; come armed with torches for wandering around after dark. You can be in Tideswell in less than five minutes on foot; once there, you have a small basics shop plus the option of four pubs, a café and Italian restaurant. The village is gateway to lots of walking and cycling in the national park, as well as family attractions, caves to explore and heritage houses.

Liked Back to basics campsite with a tap & porta loo but perfect for what we needed! The site is beautiful, great views, super quiet at night and theres at least 3 pubs within 10 minute walking distance.

Very friendly and helpful owner ( smithy)
The toilets (portaloos) were very clean and tidy.
Only a 5 minute walk into Tideswell centre.
Gorgeous views from the pitch.

Liked Great location, a short walk from Tideswell, wonderful views and plenty of room on the camp site. Even at full capacity there would be space for everyone to spread out.
Only £19.00 per night for 2 people and the dog was free. The low price reflects the limited facilities - two portaloos and a sink but the loos were spotless throughout our stay and perfectly adequate.

Walkers and cyclists have no end of choice when it comes to local routes; a favourite is the multi-use Monsal Trail (15 minutes’ drive), which cuts through valleys and woodland following a former railway line. Mountain bikers can also test their lung capacity on the challenging ride through steep Winnats Pass (15 minutes by car/50 minutes by bike). The Peak District is well known for its subterranean wonders; head for Castleton (20 minutes’ drive) to cruise on a boat through a flooded 18th-century mine at Speedwell Cavern, or check out the exquisite crystal formations in the Blue John Cavern. Just outside Buxton, Poole’s Cavern (20 minutes) is open for guided tours through caves glittering with limestone stalactites. One of the biggest pulls in the area is stately Chatsworth House (25 minutes); you can easily spend the day admiring priceless antiques in its ornate apartments and wandering the grounds – if you have children with you, there’s a petting farm to keep them amused. They might also enjoy visiting the ‘plague village’ of Eyam (10 minutes), where they can visit the macabre Riley Graves and see gruesome bubonic plague-related displays in the small museum.
