  • Family-friendly site close to top Peak District attractions
  • A 20-minute drive from Buxton, Chatsworth House and Dovedale
  • Directly opposite the Tissington Trail; close to foodie pubs and shops
Off to Derbyshire for trips to Buxton, Bakewell and beyond? The Bull i' th' Thorn is located just off the A515, making it a doddle to zip from one end of the Peaks to the other and be back in time for tea. This peaceful park is set deep in the Peak District and comes with the sweeping views to prove it. Muddy boots are welcome at this outdoorsy spot – handy indeed given that the car-free Tissington Trail is opposite the site. After days packed with outdoor exploring, you’ll likely appreciate The Bull i' th' Thorn's hot showers (a separate shower room is available for families travelling with young kids). There are also three water points, an outdoor washing-up area for self-catering sorts and unisex toilets and showers. Although this is a self-check-in site, a member of staff cleans the facilities daily. The site's sister pub is a couple of minutes' drive away or a five- to 10-minute walk away via a public footpath. It's open every day; food is served from 12pm to 9pm, and breakfast is served from 8.30am to 11am on weekend mornings. The site is also a few minutes’ stroll from Tagg Lane Dairy, a family-run gelateria that uses raw milk straight from their pampered Jersey dairy herd.

Electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Location, views and pitches were great. Kids playground was great.

Disliked Showers temperamental with water issues. Bizarre location of additional wash rooms. May be wrong but it felt as though some cyclists/others came into camp to use the facilities when they weren’t staying. It made it seem less secure.

Electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked On the positive side, the pitches were a good size and the surrounding countryside views were lovely. With some investment and improvements to the facilities, this could be a much nicer campsite.

Disliked We were disappointed with some aspects of our stay at this campsite. The shower and toilet facilities are unisex, which we weren’t particularly comfortable with, especially when travelling with young children. The facilities themselves are also in need of refurbishment and a thorough clean.
The family wash block is located across the play area at the front of the site, next to the closed-down pub and essentially on the pub car park, right beside a busy main road. We also felt that the children’s play area could do with updating.
During our stay, one of the individual showers was broken and unavailable, leaving only the toilet and sink facilities usable in that unit. There was also a lack of suitable places to hang or put towels, clean clothes and toiletries, making it difficult to keep things clean and dry.
The bins were also overflowing during our stay, which was disappointing.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Very well located site. Shower/toilet pods good.
The extra family wash rooms situated to the front of the pub/property is not the best. As the main property/pub is up for sale, it's all a bit run down and un-loved. However I would recommend staying at this campground, lovely feel & views!

Electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely location and quiet site. Big pitches too. Easy check in and plenty of info at reception shed. Plenty of water points.

Disliked Showers & toilets ok but need some tlc as gaffa tape isn't a repair. Cleaned every day but leaks as water always all over floor and one shower out of order. Our pitch also had muck all over it so we had to sit at front of pitch. Aside from that this is an ok site. Wifi is shocking.

Local attractions

This countrified site is close to beauty spots like Dovedale (20 minutes' drive), where you can stroll along the water's edge and picnic by the far-farmed stepping stones. For a more adventurous (and hillier) trek on foot, pick up the nearby Limestone Way in Monyash (five minutes). Looking for cycle hire? Head to Parsley Hay (five minutes) to hire bikes (including accessible models) and tandems. This is where the High Peak and Tissington trails meet (both run along flat former railway lines, so there's little chance you'll run out of puff). Chatsworth House (20 minutes) has grand gardens and elegant interiors to admire (there's also a guinea pig village that's likely to revive any tiddlers suffering from museum fatigue). Buxton (15 minutes) is a spa town of similarly posh repute and is full of boutique shops, ornate terraces and cultural sites (it also plays host to the Buxton Festival throughout the month of July). It's also home to two popular golf courses (the Cavendish Golf Club for hot shots and Peak Practice Golf for newbies).
