Sleepy Hollow Farm: Freedom

General

  • Secluded and relaxing site on the southern edge of the Peak District
  • A 15-minute drive to Matlock or Ashbourne; a mile to Carsington Water
  • Set on a peaceful rare breeds farm; families welcome

Kids curious about all things fluffy? This small-scale rare breeds farm has a flock of hand-reared sheep that may very well be up for a spot of nuzzling, as well as a rather handsome white horse called Whisper. Sleepy Hollow Farm, in short, is a real gem of a site for families, with a prime Derbyshire location to sweeten the deal.

This spot makes a splendid stomping ground for farm-obsessed tots, but also for hiking fans, who can access the edge of the Peak District National Park in a five-minute drive. What's more, Carsington Water, a hub for watersports with nature trails, is a mere mile away from base.

There's a lot of room for wandering on site, too – 10 whole acres have been put aside for rambling, with views over Carsington Water to reward you if you make it all the way to the upper fields.

When it comes to practicalities, the toilet and shower facilities at Sleepy Hollow Farm prove very handy to have about, as do the washing-up area and wifi.

It's just under a mile by road to the nearby market town of Wirksworth, where there's a handful of independent shops and cafés you can poke your nose into. Make for Matlock (15 minutes’ drive) if you need a big supermarket, or swing by Matlock Bath next door and amble awhile along the river Derwent.

Please note

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

First time staying in a glamping tent and although we have nothing to compare it to we felt it was done to a really high standard. Had a real feel of luxury to it and the complimentary wine, tea, coffee and biscuits are a really nice touch. Kate was a lovely lady, introduced herself and made sure everything was to standard. Quiet park and would stay here again.

    Disliked:

Not necessarily a dislike but if the site was at full capacity I'm not sure one toilet and one shower would suffice. Having said that we didn't ever have to wait so not a problem during our visit.

This glamping bell tent was so much fun. Great space even bigger inside than we had anticipated. The bed was super comfortable. There was a 2 seater sofa, a chair, huge cushions a large coffee table to put all of your plates etc. Kate had given us a welcome pack! How kind was that! She had also supplied cups, glasses, some tea coffee milk and sugar! There was a jar of biscuits and some chocolates this is going above and beyond anything we were expecting. There was a kettle and a mini fridge! Fantastic. One of our favourite things had to be having the wood burner giving a super cosy warmth to an English August evening. We lit the candles on the tables and put the glamping lights on above and around the bed. We both loved our time here. It's an excellent facility. This is a perfect site for us as we wanted something which wasn't going to have pitches on top of each other. The loo and shower were spotless, another good thing about this site. We would definitely return and I'm going to recommend this site to friends and family. Speaking to Kate and Irk was nice, we met the dogs on site and they told us that the sheep are friendly as they've been bottle fed. What a fantastic time we had. A big thumbs up from both of us. Thank you.

The beds were very comfy, the electric heater did a great job of heating the tent in the evenings. The candles, lamps and fairy lights were beautiful.
The shower and toilet facilities were great, nice and private, always clean.

Local attractions

So, you've eyed up Carsington Water from the heights of Sleepy Hollow Farm and now you're ready to take the plunge… Head down to the outdoor activities centre (10 minutes' drive) for a chance to set sail in a dinghy or canoe, or, if you're keen to keep things firmly on dry land, hire a bike instead and take the troops for a spin.

You certainly won't find yourself short of family-friendly options around these parts – Matlock Bath (15 minutes) has old-school arcades and an aquarium-cum-hologram affair that's just as colourful as it sounds. Just outside town, the Heights of Abraham cable car and caves presents another tiddler-pleasing combo, with the bigger rides of Alton Towers (30 minutes) just a little further afield.

Prefer some peaceful Peak District times? Ashbourne and the start of the Tissington Trail is 15 minutes' drive away, while dawdling at Dovedale stepping stones (half an hour) is also pretty sure to bring about some inner calm.
