  • Peaceful riverside pop-up site in the Derbyshire Peak District
  • Peak District National Park 15 minutes’ drive; Chatsworth 25 minutes
  • Dog walks straight from the pitches; Barlow pubs 10 minutes’ drive
Overlooking Barlow Brook in gorgeous Derbyshire countryside, Riverside Valley Camping is a peaceful family-run pop-up site on a smallholding that’s home to a herd of dairy cows. The ethos here is simplicity: the owners have kept things basic with minimal facilities to preserve the calm of the surrounding woodland. This means no showers, no electricity and lights off at 10pm please. There are two camping areas: the field designated for adults has riverside pitches, while the family camping meadow is safely fenced off from the water. Chargeable extras include firepits available for hire, while you can cuddle gentle calves and take them for a (supervised) walk for an extra fee, and there’s the option to bottle-feed lambs in late spring. The whole site is dog-friendly, and there are lots of easily accessed footpaths around for exercising them. They might also like to have a dip in the river, but please just remember to clean up after them and keep them on leads around the pitches. If you’re a keen hiker, you can look forward to long moorland and valley rambles in the Peak District National Park (15 minutes’ drive), and Derbyshire heritage landmarks are easily accessed too – Chatsworth House, its grounds and opulent state rooms are 25 minutes’ away by car.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch (adults only)

Liked The composting toilets were very clean, apart from when leaving and someone decided not to clean up after them selves, which spoils it for others, as the owner had been round and seen to spend time cleaning them....

Disliked I totally except they're promoting the wild camping experience, but I just felt it was on the expensive side for 1 person and no EHU.....Also the adults only field wasn't adults only

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch (adults only)

Liked The campsite was nice and spacious and the adult pitch was a good idea.
Great location and a short walk to the pub and fishing lakes. The village was really nice and we had a lovely walk around.

Disliked Only thing was the toilets not a snob but a shed with a hole in and toilet seat for me for £35 a night is not really adequate. Was really smelly and saw lots of people one being physically sick when going in there. Also the shower was right by the main entry and not enough for the amount of people.
Maybe if shower n toilet facilities were improved would come again .

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch (adults only)

Liked We loved it here. Stayed in our campervan in the adults field and really enjoyed our stay. The hosts Katie and Alistair were great! They really go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your stay. They have a pizza food truck, which are well worth a go and sell fire pits and logs. Brilliant. Showers and compostable toilets (with proper seats) were kept beautifully clean throughout our stay. A lovely, chilled, peaceful site with a relaxed pitch-where-you-like attitude. See you next time!

Disliked Nothing. We can live with no hook up.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch (adults only)

Liked We spent 2 nights at Riverside Valley camping with our roof tent. Our pitch was right next to the river adults only. Its the perfect spot if you want to switch off and relax. Pub was 20 min walk with great atmosphere. Full phone reception on site. The owner was a nice guy. We will come back. Overall a good experience.

Disliked The only thing we didnt like was the toilet. Its a compost toilet and unisex. After a busy day it was really bad. We luckily had our own portaloo which we decided to use instead. Second night an elderly couple pitched up close and listened to russian music till late almost midnight and collecting and snapping wood from the wood. All the noise that came was from them. 7am they were back with their music and tree branches snapping. We were glad they only came on day 2 😅

Bell tent (riverside, woodland)

Liked We had a great family stay in the bell tent this weekend, we didn’t want to come home. Perfect little set up with everything we needed, Katie and Alistair couldn’t do enough for us and the pizzas were delicious.

Paddling and dipping in our own little river, and warming by the fire pit were just some of our highlights. We can’t wait to come back soon.

Really nice site and they’ve only been up and running a couple of years. Really well maintained and lovely owners. Can’t wait to come back

Disliked Non flushing toilets were a bit hard to get used to especially when people didn’t help with keeping them clean.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch (adults only)

Liked Lovely location and it was nice to get a spot right next to the river.

Disliked About 11.20pm a car turned up full of very noisy guests who put their headlights on full beam to try and put their tent up and the lights went straight onto our tent, they were very loud for just over an hour which was really annoying as up to this point our stay was very quiet and relaxing.

Family Field non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Great open space, very quiet and peaceful, owners are really friendly and come round and see everyone. Pizza and fire pits on site are great but the best part for me was being able to pitch up meters from the kids play area so you can relax and still keep and eye on the little ones.

Disliked Nothing really. Only change I’d recommend is to upgrade the latch on the toilets so there isn’t as much as a gap.

Local attractions

The cute village of Barlow (10 minutes’ drive) is home to two award-winning gastro pubs, two breweries and plenty of scenic hiking and biking trails. During August, you’ll witness intricate floral displays known as well dressings decorating the streets, and summertime also brings Barlow Carnival, featuring a parade, delicious local food and beer, live entertainment and a funfair for families. The market town of Chesterfield (also 10 minutes) has half-timbered, galleried shopping arcades and the landmark Crooked Spire church. Bakewell (half an hour) is another lively town with upscale shops, bakeries selling the speciality jam and almond sponge Bakewell tarts, and strolls alongside the River Wye. If you’re trying to sneak some culture into your Derbyshire camping holiday, handsome Chatsworth House (25 minutes) is a good place to start; it has ornate suites of rooms filled with priceless antiques, but there’s also a petting zoo and parkland walks for any bored kids. You have other options for family days out too, including waterslides and a dinosaur trail for younger children at Gulliver’s Kingdom, or cable-car rides and cavern tours at the Heights of Abraham (both 40 minutes).
