  • Peaceful and sheltered adults-only site on a working farm
  • A 15-minute drive from Buxton; Bakewell 20 minutes
  • A few minutes' walk from a traditional country pub and the river Dove
Small in size but big on views – that’s the fine mix on offer at Crowdecote Campsite, an adults-only farm site in the Peak District National Park near the little village of Crowdecote. Green fields, trees and hills are all around at this quiet Derbyshire site, and local beauty spots like the river Dove, Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill are all within comfortable walking distance. Facilities on site are low-key so as not to detract from these peaceful surrounds, but essentials like a toilet, shower, running water and chemical disposal are all provided (the shower has hot water but please note there's no hot water elsewhere). This rural spot is also home to a herd of friendly cattle and their pygmy goat pals Kenny and Dave, all of whom can be seen in fields by the site. Dogs are welcome here, but please keep them on a lead and under control – this is a working farm, after all. Firepits are also welcome, and firewood is available to purchase on site. You'll need to keep all fires/barbecues in a steel container that's raised off the ground (please don't light fires on the ground or try to construct a firepit out of stones). Looking for something to make that view even nicer? A friendly country pub is a short walk away and a handy local bus service to Buxton and Ashbourne stops just opposite the pub, so you won't necessarily need a car for local hill walks (and you can also head straight out to Dragon's Back or Chrome Hill on a footpath from the site). The next village over is Longor (just over a mile away), where there's a café, bar and well-liked local chip shop.

Electric grass pitch (adults only)

Liked: Beautiful scenery. Clean facilities. Great pub down the road. Lovely walks from the site. Helpful owner

Disliked: There had been a lot of rain so the ground was very soft and the track extremely muddy. We camped near the entrance as we’re afraid we’d get stuck otherwise

Non-electric grass pitch (adults only)

Liked: Decent facilities , nice views from campsite. Although we didn’t use them it was nice to have fire pits available and the picnic bench was a nice touch. There were lots of walks directly from the campsite so you not need to drive anywhere. A good pub a short walk away was definitely a positive! The fellow campers were all very nice and there was no rowdiness. Ideal for a longer weekend as there were so many places to walk.

Disliked: Facilities not quite as nice as we have seen but wouldn’t say they were bad. They were clean . The entrance and exit was a slight issue as it had rained quite a bit and was muddy.

Non-electric grass pitch (adults only)

Liked: Great campsite, plenty of space between pitches, nice and quiet (being adult only site), outstanding scenery, spot on facilities. Would recommend the pub, food was lovely.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike. Option to purchase firewood when owner unavailable would have been the only thing missing for us.

Electric grass pitch (adults only)

Liked: Nice location and fantastic Pub (Pack Horse Inn) within easy walking distance. Good pitch with easy electric hookup.

Disliked: The amenities were very basic. Only two showers in men’s and same for ladies. Showers were very eratic scolding to cold with very caustic instructions on doors. No hot water for washing up pots. No service mentality on site - you felt it was always your fault. No good information about local pubs etc about opening times etc.

From the manager: There's always a few reviews like this. We get about 1500 bookings per year and maybe 3 reviews complaining that we provide what we say we will. Amenities basic - Correct, all presented and as pictured/described in the site listing. We have two more showers than we had last year and they manage just fine with the numbers we have on site. Showers fluctuating hot and cold - the "Caustic" instructions explain clearly how to use the showers. No Hot Water for Washing Pots - We know, we specify this in the listing. It's all there in the listing. No good information about local pubs etc - you obviously didn't read the morning welcome text which I know that you received. This contains loads of info on local businesses and opening times of the local pub. No service mentality on site - I spend as much time as I can on site. I'm down every morning and every evening at a minimum to clean out the toilets and showers, empty bins, re-stock loo rolls, cut the grass, attend to any maintenance and try to introduce myself to guests (that's around 3000 people per season, some people get missed) If the weather is rough I'm on site all day to make sure everyone is OK. If the weather is glorious and sunny I sometimes step away a bit because... well its a field at the end of the day isn't it. I'd also add the cheapest field around by far when you consider the amenities that you get, location AND a hookup. I think maybe you'd be better off at a more commercial site. All the things that you've disliked you probably could have avoided by just taking a bit more care and are readily available at more commercial setups... along with the price tag and location next to a main road. Kind Regards Steve@CC

Anyone for a walk? There are plenty of those around – as well as the routes by the site, you may like to pick up the Tissington Trail (five minutes’ drive), hunt for history at Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (10 minutes) or explore Errwood Reservoir (20 minutes), which is also a good spot for some fly fishing. Different landscape options include venturing underground at Poole's Cavern and Buxton Country Park (15 minutes) or making your way across the River Dove at the Dovedale Stepping Stones (25 minutes). Chatsworth House (25 minutes) is always worth a visit too, for tours of the house, a wander among the sculptures in the garden and some choice bits from the farm shop. For some town time, try the elegant spa town of Buxton (15 minutes) or head to Bakewell (20 minutes) to sample its famous puddings.
