Behold, free spirits – it’s a pick your own pitch affair at Chinley Camping, a relaxed rural site between the Derbyshire villages of Chinley and Chapel-en-le-Frith (and less than five minutes’ drive/20 minutes’ walk from both). Settle down in whichever corner of the field appeals most at this family-run farm, and feel free to spread out over a decent amount of space – there’s plenty to go around at the five-acre smallholding, although the flock of Icelandic sheep and the friendly chickens have already laid claim to a fair chunk of it (you’ll get fresh eggs from the latter though, so it’s worth treating them very nicely…). A scenic setting on the edge of the Peak District National Park means that the views from wherever you pitch up are pretty fine. It’s the sort of spot that’d lend itself well to an evening round the barbecue or firepit, you may assess – and that opinion is enthusiastically shared by the site owners, who'll sell you firewood to help make the flames happen. Walks from the site also get the thumbs up from the owners, who suggest everything from intrepid climbs up Kinder Scout (two and a half hours away on foot) to gentler ambles to the local pubs (a far less leg-busting 20 minutes). As it’s safe to assume guests are in search of peace and views rather than noisy entertainment, facilities have been kept simple, just stretching to a shower and a toilet in the field – it’s worth bringing a torch along to help you locate such things after sunset.

Local attractions

Having had a taster of the Peak District National Park’s views from the farm, it’s time to get stuck in for real. There are hundreds of trails to choose from in the area, including quiet footpaths and well-known routes like the Peak Forest Canal towpath (25 minutes’ drive) and the Monsal Trail (half an hour). If you’re out and about on bikes, the site owners recommend heading out on the Pennine Bridleway, which passes the site, or hitting the historic tramway for access to the canal path. And if you’d like to head underground, that’s easily done with a tour of the limestone cave at Blue John Cavern, or a boat trip to a huge subterranean lake at Speedwell Cavern (both about 10 minutes by car). Those who watched the British telly adaptation of Pride and Prejudice will recognise the National Trust estate at Lyme (20 minutes) – its exterior was used as the body double for Pemberley, and both house and gardens make for fine wandering (even if the lake doesn’t yield a dripping Mr Darcy…).
