  • Grass pitches on a farm overlooking Arnfield Reservoir, Derbyshire
  • On the Trans Pennine Trail and 10 minutes’ drive from the Pennine Way
  • Walking and cycling accessible from the site; café-bar on site
Keen to get some hiking in? Crossgate Farm Campsite may be just the spot for you. Set on a working farm with views over Arnfield Reservoir and Longdendale on the outskirts of Tintwistle, Derbyshire, this is a smashing place for walkers and bikers, as guests have direct access to the Trans Pennine Trail, the Pennine Bridleway and Pennine Cycleway Route 68 from the site. Pick-up from public transport can also be arranged so you don’t need to worry about bringing a car. You can pitch up pretty much anywhere you want in the slightly sloping camping field, and while dogs are welcome on your Derbyshire farm stay, please keep them on a lead around the cattle. You’ll also probably be joined at some stage by the free-range chicks, guinea fowls and peacocks. Amenities-wise, the site has toilets and showers with separate male and female facilities. There is a café-bar on site, but if you prefer to do your own meal prep, barbecues are permitted on the camping field (bring your own gear). The village of Hollingworth (five minutes’ drive) has a small convenience store as well as pubs and takeaways.

What customers say

Crossgate Farm Campsite is praised for its stunning views, friendly staff, and on-site cafe/bar. Visitors enjoyed the animals, particularly the goats, and found the location ideal for walks. Facilities are generally described as clean and new, though some reviews mention issues with portaloos and a lack of dedicated washing-up areas. The site's hilly terrain is noted by several guests, with some finding pitches sloped. Despite basic facilities, many reviewers would recommend and return.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Such lovely people, greeted on arrival and shown where abouts everything is. Toilets/ showers are absolutely immaculate for a camp site and it is possible to buy drinks from in the cafe if needed. Not to far away from shops/ petrol stations.

Disliked Cafe could open a little earlier in the morning however not a major issue.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked We had a fantastic stay at this scenic campsite! The views from our pitch were beautiful, and it was a perfect base for hiking in the area. The shower and toilet facilities were clean and well maintained, which made the stay even more comfortable. Our kids absolutely loved feeding the friendly goats — such a lovely touch for families. It’s also really convenient being so close to shops, so we could easily pick up anything we needed. Highly recommend for a relaxing and enjoyable getaway!

Disliked You need to bring your fire pit, the bench table needs some attention

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely campsite, absolutely stunning views, nice clean toilets, the site is on a bit of a slope but there are lots of flat areas. We hired a fire pit with wood for £10 and a £20 deposit which was a welcome addition to a bit of a damp weekend, the cafe on site was lovely food as well, all the team we spoke to were lovely and friendly too

Disliked Not so much a dislike but worth noting, There were events on at the bar both nights we were there which went past the 10pm curfew you could hear it at our pitch, it didn't bother us, but I can't comment on how strictly the 10pm rule is enforced if these events weren't on. Also be aware there is quite a slope up to the toilet block from the pitches

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Friendly welcome and nice stop off for only £15 a night. Newly built shower and toilet block.. lovely looking café bar on site (didn't visit). Could feed the goats. Dogs permitted on leads. Lovely view of the surrounding area and reservoir in the right spot.
Shower was great (you need £1 or 20ps) Had a bigger, accessible toilet

Disliked Smell in toilets maybe from septic tank was overpowering.
There was a private function on when I arrived so loud and voices until late. I was told this on arrival and it really didn't bother me but it might others if expecting a quiet spot.
No proper washing up facilities at the time of writing but these were being built.
Planes fly over from Manchester airport and could hear road noise.

Local attractions

There’s bike hire in Hadfield (five minutes’ drive) for cyclists keen to embark on the Pennine Cycleway Route 68, which can be accessed from the camping field along with the Pennine Bridleway and Trans Pennine Trail. There is a connection to the Pennine Way at Torside Reservoir (10 minutes). If you’re just not that into the long-distance, serious hiking stuff, you can still get plenty of bracing Derbyshire air fishing at Arnfield Fly Fishery (five minutes’ walk), practising your swing on 18-hole golf courses (20 minutes) and exploring Pennine trails on horseback (15 minutes). Birdwatchers might get lucky and see curlews and red grouse flitting around the water at Dove Stone Nature Reserve (25 minutes), or woodpeckers, long-tailed tits and owls at Eastwood Nature Reserve (10 minutes). Keep an eye out for hares, red grouse and warblers as you circumnavigate Ladybower Reservoir (half an hour), or see if you can spot harriers high above rugged Kinder Scout (50 minutes).
