  • Spacious Peak District safari tents in the village of Edale
  • Mam Tor and the Castleton show caves within 15 mins' drive
  • Station a short walk away for trains from Sheffield or Manchester
Escaping to the countryside is made fabulously easy at The Gathering. This glamping site is in the village of Edale, a pretty spot in Derbyshire’s Hope Valley, and it’s within an hour’s drive of both Manchester and Sheffield. Even better, there are direct connections from both cities to the village’s railway station – making this an excellent spot for anyone looking for car-free travels. The village (with a couple of pubs and cafés as well as the station) is about 15 minutes’ walk from the site, which is part of a private upland farm at the start of the Pennine Way. It’s all surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the Peak District National Park, so you’ll have direct access to walking trails and bike routes taking in heather moorland, woodland and rocky crags. From the site you can also follow a brook to a waterfall and plunge pool for a refreshing dip at the end of your day out. Maps are provided in your tent to help you find your way around, and owners Kirsty and Tommy are very happy to offer ideas on places you may like to visit nearby, whether you need advice on suitable walks (long or short), help to book climbing and caving adventures or tips on places to visit nearby. Accommodation here is in smart and sturdy safari tents, each with three bedrooms, a bathroom, a well-equipped kitchen and a comfy living space. Woodburning stoves and firepits should help to keep you warm both indoors and out, whatever the weather.

Local attractions

There are heaps of great walks around here, from a short half-hour flat trail for kids to longer walks through woods or up slopes onto the moors (handily, many of them pass the pub on the way back…). You can also head further afield to places like Mam Tor (five minutes’ drive), Kinder Scout (20 minutes) and the Monsal Trail from Bakewell (half an hour). Castleton (15 minutes) is definitely worth some of your time – it’s home to four show caves that all have slightly different vibes. Peak Cavern is the only wholly natural one, with Speedwell Cavern, Treak Cliff Cavern and Blue John Cavern created through mining. Each one is spectacular in its own way – ask on site to find out which one they recommend you visiting. For other family days out, learn about the ‘plague village’ at Eyam Museum (half an hour), meet cute animals at Mayfield Alpacas Farm & Animal Sanctuary (40 minutes) or visit Chatsworth (40 minutes) to explore the grand house, wander the extensive grounds and have fun at the adventure playground.
