General

  • Family barn stays in the Peak District National Park
  • Half an hour's drive from Alton Towers
  • Within a mile's walk of pubs serving food

Love outdoor hols but not a huge fan of tents? Then Alstonefield Camping Barn, a countryside barn five minutes’ drive from the village of Alstonefield in Derbyshire, is the place for you. And if you love pubs but don't like a lengthy journey back to your berth? Pubs serving food are about a mile's walk away.

A stay at the barn is a stay in a peaceful retreat – there’s no electricity here (wave bye to your Netflix account for your stay), so there are no distractions from the meadow around the barn and the many trails and bridleways through the hills and dales of this part of the Peak District.

From the door of the camping barn, you can follow trails to Narrowdale, Beresford Dale and Wolfscote Dale, and on to remote moorland bridleways for experienced mountain bikers. You can also join the Tissington Trail in nearby Alsop en le Dale or at its starting point in Ashbourne, or you can hire a bike near Waterhouses, 20 minutes away, to explore the Manifold Track (make sure to trek up to spectacular Thor’s Cave).

Once you’ve worked up an appetite (which you surely will), return to the barn to cook up a meal at the kitchen on your camping stove, among the exposed stonework and wooden beams keeping you dry and snug. For supplies, local shops are 10 minutes' drive away and supermarkets are 20 minutes' drive from the barn.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

We took 6 youngsters from our Boys' Brigade Youth Organisation ...08/11/2019

We took 6 youngsters from our Boys' Brigade Youth Organisation to this place. They were aged 11 - 16 years. They had no idea where they were going but some had the idea they were staying at Alton Towers Hotel. As you might expect they were in shock for about ten minutes when travelling up the lane to find this place at the end of the track. We only stayed for one night and organised lots of activities and challenges for the evening. No mobiles or any distractions.
This is a wonderful place to get away from those luxuries you may find at home. Log Burner gave you the warmth in a spacious kitchen and the whole house was lit up by tea-lights. Youngsters slept upstairs with plenty of room, we stayed end of October, decent sleeping bag or extra blankets.
It was a great experience for the youngsters who had a wonderful time in staying somewhere different from the norm. They bonded well over the short time.
Excellent communication with the hosts before and during the stay.
We will return due to such a great weekend. Thanking you Theresa.

From the manager...

Thank you for your kind review
Glad you enjoyed the log burner, location and being free of all mod cons!!
I understand why you scored us low on Value for money as unfortunately it works out more expensive when just a couple rent out the barn as the sole use price is based on a party of 12 staying. However, I am pleased you decided to try out our barn and I enjoyed meeting you both and thank you for staying with us and leaving the barn spotless.
Hope to see you again, kind regards Teresa

4 boys and their mums on an adventure to celebrate the end of their primary school journey! Amazing weekend amongst beautiful scenery with no electricity and so no screens!! Blissful. Toilet much better than expected!!

From the manager...

Thanks so much for this positive review. Your comment about the toilet made me giggle and after discussing this comment with you further I thought I would take this opportunity to just make it clear that the toilet/washroom is in the barn itself and its much better than camping in the respect that you do not have to venture outside/or go to a different building to use the wc
Hope you return soon.

Local attractions

Add an element of grandeur to your hols with a stop at any one (or all) of the stately homes in the area around Alstonefield Camping Barn – the spectacular Tissington Hall is 10 minutes’ drive away, and the stunning Hardwick Hall, Sudbury Hall (and Museum of Childhood), Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are all within roughly half an hour.

If tripping around grand gardens and hallowed halls is a little too sedate for you, there’s plenty nearby to keep you active instead: try horse riding and pony trekking at Northfield Farm or take to Carsington Water for sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing, powerboating and fishing.

To keep the kids on side, you might like to hitch a ride on the Churnet Valley Railway, take a trip into Buxton for underground adventures at Poole’s Cavern, or traipse over to Matlock for Gulliver’s Kingdom and the Peak District Mining Museum. Not enough for them? Pile into the car and head to Alton Towers, just over half an hour away, for an adrenaline boost and a couple of thrill rides.
