Woolly Lodge: Outdoor space

General

  • Luxury adults-only glamping on a working farm with Derbyshire views
  • Peak District National Park 20 minutes’ drive; Chatsworth half an hour
  • Wooden lodge with full kitchen and garden; shops five minutes’ drive

What a gorgeous and cosy rural retreat – a roomy and luxuriously appointed wooden lodge just made for two. If you’re a loved-up couple searching for some rural downtime, this is a lovely spot, with gorgeous countryside views and pole position when it comes to exploring the glorious Peak District National Park.

Set on a busy working smallholding near Chesterfield in Derbyshire, this stylish lodge is kitted out with a handmade wooden bed (and a super-comfy mattress) in the cosy double bedroom, and a bathroom with a proper-size corner shower.

The kitchen has a full-size oven plus everything you need to cook up a feast (source foodie treats in Chesterfield, five minutes’ drive), and there’s a dining table in the open-plan living space, where you can also kick back on the sofa and watch TV or plan adventures for the days ahead.

Outside the private garden is sheltered by a picket fence. On warm and sunny days, linger over alfresco dining while admiring the rural views – and after dark on clear nights, cuddle up by the firepit and gaze up at the starry sky.

I wish English was my native language and I would be able to praise enough Liz- the owner of this lodge. She amazed me from the beginning when I just booked our stay. Liz contacted me the same day, and, as we were going to stay over Christmas, she kindly offered us a Christmas dinner. When we first arrived it was nice and warm in the lodge as she switched the heater on in advance. We were really surprised when noticed prepared for us a bottle of alcohol fizzy drink on the table. It's not b&b and we didn't expect owner to leave for us anything from the food. But there were tea, coffee, sugar, salt, vinegar, pepper. Liz even left a full bottle of milk in the fridge. Lodge is fully equipped. There is everything you might need during your stay and even more. The place is very clean. I really don't know when Liz manages to do everything. The Christmas dinner deserved 10 stars out 5)))) It last us two days. Everything was done to perfect! Christmas tree what Liz left in the lodge made an atmosphere.
There is beautiful view over farmland with a lot of sheep. Location on its own is very good.
Unfortunately in the winter it's too cold to use the firepit, but in the summer it must be great. There are quite a few tables and chairs to relax in the warm summer evening.
Just before coming here I got a cold. And my husband got it when we were already hire. Liz noticed that and she brought us as a present two jars of farmers honey. Where she managed to get it from on a Boxing day? Just miracle.
As we both were not too well in the morning of our departure Liz sent a message and kindly offered do not rush and let us leave for a couple of hours later.
Even if I didn't like everything about the lodge ( but I really liked!) I would come here again just because of Liz! She is the best host I ever met and beautiful example what a human should be like. I wish I could find a friend here like Liz! She is simply the best.

We loved everything about our stay at Woolly Lodge. Two nights wasn’t long enough and we’re already thinking about when we can return! Liz, the owner, even brought a beautiful bouquet and bottle of wine over when she found out it was my girlfriend’s birthday.

This is a fully equipped lodge with all you need for a comfortable and relaxing stay. The owner is extremely friendly and helpful. The location is off the beaten track and is great for chilling out around the fire pit in the evening! Car parking is available next to the lodge. The nearest pub is 1.5 miles away and easily within walking distance. It’s also close to attractions such as Bolsover Castle which we visited during our stay.

Local attractions

Lively Chesterfield (five minutes’ drive) rewards a visit for its historic heart, with shops and cafés tucked into half-timbered townhouses in The Shambles, and a sprawling open-air market on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. The Gothic-era St Mary and All Saints church has a curiously twisted spire that's become a much-loved local landmark – climb to the top for views over the town’s rooftops.

Other local landmarks include hilltop Bolsover Castle (10 minutes), with its intricate fairytale design and lovely gardens. National Trust-owned Hardwick House (15 minutes) is one of the finest Tudor mansions in the country, with landscaped gardens and elaborate interiors to tour, while Chatsworth House (half an hour) deserves a day exploring its vast estates and intricate apartments.

And of course the Peak District National Park (20 minutes) beckons, with its many hiking and cycling routes covering steep valleys and exposed moorland. Riverside Bakewell (half an hour), Edale (55 minutes, and the official start of the Pennine Way) and the plague village of Eyam (half an hour) are just a few of its many pretty villages with cosy pubs for leisurely lunches.
