  • Caravan and Motorhome Club site at a 165-acre Derbyshire country park
  • A half-hour drive to Peak District walks and Chatsworth Estate
  • Member price shown; non-members select £15/night extra or join for £69
You’ll spot a couple of colliery wheels as you enter Poolsbrook Country Park, tipping you off that this 165-acre park just outside Chesterfield was once an industrial site. There are very few traces of that left now though – these days it’s all open space, with several wildlife habitats, fishing lakes, cycling trails, an adventure play area and a café. It’s a lovely place for a day out – and an even better place for an overnight stay, which is exactly what you’ll be able to do at Poolsbrook Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Site, a touring site within the country park. Pitches here are well placed for easy days of fishing, cycling, walking, wildlife watching and generally chilling out in a green space – and as they’re only a few minutes’ drive from the M1 they’re also a handy option for a short stopover on a longer journey. The site is managed by the Caravan and Motorhome Club and open to members and non-members alike, with member discounts. The price shown is for members, so non-members will need to select the £15 per night extra or buy a £69 membership – well worth considering if you're likely to spend more than four nights at a Club site over the coming year, as it brings discounts at more than 140 UK sites, plus other perks like access to tailored caravan/motorhome insurance and discounts on days out. You’ll park up on hardstanding pitches here, with access to a good collection of eco-friendly facilities including a chemical disposal point, launderette and information room as well as modern bathrooms with a baby and toddler bathroom and wheelchair-accessible facilities.

Local attractions

There are walking and cycling trails around the country park, but if you’ve got a bit more time on your hands perhaps you’d like to try out a bit of the Trans-Pennine Trail, which runs next to the park. You’ll also be within easy reach of the trails in the eastern stretch of the Peak District National Park, including popular routes around Matlock (half an hour’s drive), Bakewell (35 minutes) and Hathersage (40 minutes). Or how about dropping in to a historic estate or two? There are some particularly lovely ones around here – Chatsworth (half an hour) is the best known, but there are other options including Sutton Scarsdale Hall (10 minutes), Bolsover Castle (15 minutes) and Hardwick Hall (20 minutes). For other days out, visit the steam trains of Barrow Hill Roundhouse Railway Centre (10 minutes), step back to prehistoric times at Creswell Crags (20 minutes) or try out the play areas and petting farm at Matlock Farm Park (35 minutes).
