  • Peaceful family-friendly Peak District site next door to a farm
  • A 15-minute drive from Castleton and 20 minutes from Bakewell
  • Seating area with a woodburning stove; direct access to scenic walks
Welcome to the Peak District: pretty hikes, miles of countryside, historic properties and country lanes. Down one of those country lanes is Sweet Knoll Camping, a rather lovely (and very much peaceful) place to stay next door to a pretty Peak District farm. Spectacular views? You bet. This central part of the Peak District is particularly gorgeous, and the pitches have views of sloping green fields. A launch pad for lovely hikes? Indeed. There are a variety of walks guests can take directly from the site. If that’s not satisfying enough already, the local village pub (including a shop) is only a 15-minute walk away and can be added as a pitstop for pints or local grub. The village also has a kids' playground. The family-run site has a Belfast sink where guests can set about washing up their dishes. In the same washing-up area, there’s seating next to a woodburning stove. There are also a couple of toilets and showers on site. Barbecues are permitted at Sweet Knoll Camping should guests fancy grilling their own dinner rather than tracking down food in the local towns or villages, like Bakewell (20 minutes’ drive) and Castleton (15 minutes). The closest shops are a 10-minute drive away, or there’s a farm shop a five-minute drive away.

What customers say

This campsite is praised for its beautiful Peak District views and peaceful atmosphere. Visitors highlight the friendly and helpful owner, clean facilities including toilets and washing-up areas, and spacious, flat pitches. Animals on the farm are a noted attraction for families. Some guests experienced queues for the single toilet, especially during busy periods, and a lack of showers was mentioned. Despite these points, many found it excellent value and would happily return.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Got back this morning from a wonderful visit to this absolutely amazing camp site!! The views was out of this world 😍 Steph the owner greeted us on arrival and popped in to see how we was doing on her rounds checking in making sure everything was ok!! I was a little worried cos of some of the reviews but it’s nothing like some as said it was absolutely amazing, nice clean toilets and shower block extra portable loos was available for the weekend which was cleaned all the time, wash basing to clean all your pots and pans, plus fresh drinking water was available which came in handy with the weather being amazing. There was fresh eggs and ice creams with an honesty box, also sausage & bacon was available if you rang her son up (next time we will take advantage of this) so a massive shout out to Steph thank you for an amazing stay making memories with our little family we will be back ❤️ (from the Conroy family)

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked lovely surroundings and the animals made it great. shower and toilet space kept clean and liked that the showers had space to put clothes and get changed. easily can walk to local pub and not far drive from castleton. owner really lovely and there to help with anything you need.

Disliked would be good with another toilet or two can imagine on a busier weekend it being hard.

there was a school d of e trip which were no bother, an older group (early 20s) much more disrespectful than the teenagers, being loud until 2am but other than that everything was perfect.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Stunning views, good location, level pitches (although some more so than others), very friendly owner, clean facilities, excellent power shower! All sites should have Belfast sink pot washes 😁

Disliked Only 2 loos and 2 showers which just wasn't enough for the amount of people on site, which meant lots of queues.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Location was great, did a lovely walk from the campsite over to Castleton with views of Mam Tor, Winnets Pass and Cave Dale.
Nearby pub, surrounded by working farms so lots of sheep and cows and no road noise.
Showers were good. Warm and high pressure.

Disliked No where near enough facilities for the number of pitches they'd sold. Only two toilets for a few hundred of people meant there were queues 10+ people to use the bathroom and they'd often run out of toilet paper. There was also only one outside sink for washing up.
They really crammed people in for Saturday night so by the end there was hardly any space and people had to park their cars in front of the tent so couldn't even see the view. No enforcement of any camp rules - people had fires on the ground and being noisy until 1:30am.

From the manager: I’m sorry to hear you didn’t like your stay with us ,it was a very busy weekend so at times there was a queue for the toilets ,we have some more toilets coming in the next couple of weeks so that will definitely help. There is one outdoor sink and one indoor with hot water and that seems to be enough washing up facilities. There are camp site rules we allow campfires and campers should be considerate of others by keeping noise levels down after 10 pm and there are signs up ,but it is difficult to control but most campers are respectful.

Stunning campsite, beautiful views & really good facilities.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Absolutely stunning location and views. The field was flat!!
The owner was always present and really lovely. She kept the toilets and showers spotlessly clean, always replenishing toilet rolls etc… facilities were really good condition and clean .
We loved being on the farm and walks straight from the campsite
It never felt cramped or squashed in

Disliked There were only 2 toilets for the full campsite so there was queuing at times… they are getting a new toilet block installed within the next couple of weeks, so this won’t be a problem in the future.

We loved being next to the farm and hearing the animals… but other people might want to camp further away from the cow sheds, as they wake up quite early!!

Local attractions

Castleton (15 minutes’ drive) village is a very cute local spot. Its show caverns (including Peak Cavern, Treak Cliff Cavern and Blue John Cavern) have contributed to its fame, but the stone houses and views of Hope Valley and the High Peak are also ravishing. A walk up Mam Tor (15 minutes) is likely to please outdoorsy types. The five-mile route passes through heather moors on Kinder Scout and a reservoir before reaching the 517-metre hilltop in the High Peak. After your climb, you might decide that the Bakewell tarts and puddings of Bakewell (20 minutes) are the next natural course of action. The market town also has access to the Monsal Trail, a cycling route through old railway tunnels. Tuck into your sweet treats on the riverfront, a popular spot with other consumers of the famous tarts. There are some splendid walks around Chatsworth House (half an hour) should you crave more outdoorsy days out. Royal family members live in the house, so interested folks can book a tour to see some of the historic rooms (and the surrounding 105-acre garden and farmyard if they so wish).
