The smart spa town of Buxton is just up the road, but your immediate outlook is of the splendid scenery of the Peak District National Park – that’s the enviable location of lovely Highcliffe Farm Campsite, a family-run Derbyshire site on a working farm. In fact, Buxton is only five minutes’ drive away (making it a particularly handy place to have on hand for shopping and meals out) but the peaceful grass pitches all have a proper rural backdrop of quiet farmland and Peak District landscapes. Fancy a closer look at that scenery? Of course you do – and it’s easy to get out and see some of it on the Midshires Way footpath, which runs just past the site. And of course there are plenty more excellent spots to explore around here too: from here it’s easy to get out to such places as Bakewell and the Chatsworth Estate, or for walks on the High Peak Trail. Mam Tor and Dovedale are within a half-hour drive as well. The facilities are fairly simple at this back to basics site, but guests will have access to a portable toilet and a washing-up area, and you’re welcome to bring along dogs and barbecues. Barbecue supplies can be picked up at the farm shop five minutes’ drive away, and woodfired pizzas are available on site every Saturday evening for an easy and tasty end to the day.

Local attractions

Once you’ve meandered along the Midshires Way for a while, turn your attentions to the High Peak Trail (five minutes’ drive away) or set off towards Castleton for walks in the Hope Valley. Mam Tor (25 minutes) is another popular spot, with some of the finest views in the Peak District, and an outing to Dovedale (half an hour) is usually a hit too, especially if you have the chance to hop across the stepping stones on your walk. A day out at the Chatsworth Estate (25 minutes) is always a good bet, whether you’re planning to explore the elegant house itself, stroll through the colourful gardens or take the kids to the farmyard and woodland play areas. Animal-mad youngsters (and grownups, to be fair) are likely to love some time among furry pals at The Donkey Sanctuary, Derbyshire (10 minutes) too. And after all that? Well, surely it has to be a stop in Bakewell (20 minutes) to sample the traditional Bakewell Pudding…
