The pitches overlook peak district hills and valleys

  • Small site with Chrome Hill views in the Peak District National Park
  • Alton Towers and Chatsworth House both 35 minutes’ drive
  • Gravel touring pitches with showers; tearooms 25 minutes’ walk
Opened in 2024, Chrome Hill is a tiny touring park with very big views over the Peak District National Park – and it is also one of the highest campsites in the UK. Dedicated to use by campervans and small motorhomes, it has a modern toilet/shower block, mains water and an elsan point. This small site offers just a few gravel pitches, and each has a grassed area where a porch awning or pup tent can be put up (no charge) – and each, of course, has spectacular views over the hills and dales of the Peak District to the distinctive form of Chrome Hill (aka the Dragon’s Back), around half an hour’s amble away across the fields. Dogs are welcome, and there’s a secure exercise area dedicated just to them, as well as space for you to picnic and kick a ball around with the kids. You’ll never be short of walks in gorgeous countryside straight from the pitches, and can stroll also down to the tearooms in the pretty local hamlet of Hollinsclough in around 25 minutes. Buxton (15 minutes’ drive) is the nearest spot for topping up on groceries at the supermarket, browsing a choice of restaurants and pubs and contemplating at night at the theatre.

Non-electric gravel and earth motorhome pitch

Liked: Simple and to the point, superb gravel pitches in a beautiful area. Shower and toilet block, which on both times I've been is clean. Little area for the dogs to run around too. Cafes and pubs just a 5-minute drive away (Longnor). Awesome walks and photography treats all around. Roaches, Chrome Hill, Dragons back, Ramshaw Rocks and Luds Church to name a few. Great value too

Non-electric gravel and earth motorhome pitch

Liked: The most peaceful site with amazing views. Toilet and shower were spotless and the water was hot. We had a little walk to the local cafe which was cute and had the best bakewell slice I've ever eaten. The walk back was a little steep but helped work off the cake 😂 beautiful place to watch the sunset. Would recommend and will be back if in the area.

Non-electric gravel and earth motorhome pitch

Liked: Great little site with beautiful views in picturesque location. Friendly off site owner who visited daily and clean and functional bathroom and shower. 5 gravel with grass pitches which are nice and level. Local roads are steep and very narrow so would recommend approaching the site from Edge Top Road (Longnor to Flash road). Great location for walks or cycling around the Hollinsclough/Chrome Hill area.

Non-electric gravel and earth motorhome pitch

Liked: Great little campsite with amazing views. Very peaceful and unspoilt. Would definitely stay again. Toilet and shower very clean.

Disliked: Only one Toilet and shower housed both together. So when in use you were sometimes having to wait a fair while especially when one couple showered together keeping it occupied for over 40 minutes, no reflection on the campsite, just selfish users. However a seperate toilet would alleviate this.

Non-electric gravel and earth motorhome pitch

Liked: Amazing views, really quiet and a lovely little site. Owners were really quick to let us know how to reset the power for the toilets and good little shower with lovely hot water!

Disliked: Needs a shower curtain or screen that goes to the floor… no matter how careful you are, the floor does swamp with a shower.

Non-electric gravel and earth motorhome pitch

Liked: Small, basic campsite, good for a short stay, facilities were clean and adequate. Beautiful views, great starting point for climbing Chrome Hill. Minor inconvenience was no hot water on Saturday morning, but after contacting campsite owner, this was very quickly resolved. All in all we would stay again in the future.

Disliked: Not really dislikes as such, but some things you might want to note or consider. Roads around it are steep and narrow, especially road towards Hollinsclough - bare that in mind if travelling in a motorhome. Entry to the campsite looks to be freshly gravelled and has a bit of a step in and out - we witnessed fellow campervan scraping it's underside on it (van looked lowered so that probably didn't help). Site is exposed and can be quite windy. First night was nice and quiet, we heard nothing but sheep and wind, however, on Saturday we think Buxton raceway had an event going on up till around 10.30pm and it was quite loud and spoiled the tranquility of the place a bit for us. So if we ever stay here again, we will check the raceway calendar first! We would also like to suggest to owners some additions to the toilet block - instead of shower curtain, perhaps solid half partition would be more practical between shower and toilet part, as water just runs off the curtain straight to the other side of wet room part, going behind the toilet and under the sink. And couple of hooks on the inside of main toilet/shower block door to hang your outer clothing would be very handy, especially in wet weather.

From the manager: hi Elizabeth/partner. thank you for coming to stay at the site and for such a great review we really do appreciate it and happy you liked the site and would recommend to others. we can confirm the hump in the entrance was a temporary measure for that weekend as we altered the entrance to enable the larger vans, it has now been finished and rolled smooth. buxton raceway, over in the next valley only has approximately 3 meetings a year which run into late evening, so was unfortunate that one of them was on the specific day you stayed. other points will be considered but thanks again and hopefully look forward to seeing you again. best wishes louis/diana...
