General

  • Flat, grassy and dog-friendly park opposite Shining Cliff Woods
  • A 10-min drive to Belper and 30 from the Peak District National Park
  • E-bike and mountain bike hire available on site

Set your sights towards Tannenbaum Campsite for a high chance of a top time in the Derbyshire countryside at this flat, grassy and dog-friendly park opposite the Higg Lane entrance of Shining Cliff Woods. This spot on the outskirts of the village of Alderwasley is a grand base for walking, cycling and generally exploring the Peak District National Park a half-hour drive away.

If you’re one for aquatic activities, Carsington Water is a 20-minute drive away, for kayaking, sailing, fly fishing and standup paddleboarding. Along the banks, birdwatching, biking and bumbling about are welcome as well. Also nearby is the Crich Tramway Village at under 15 minutes’ drive away; visit here to see around 60 trams created between 1873 and 1982 sitting in a period-style settlement with an old-school pub, café, sweetshop and tram depots.

Head back to the site via Wirksworth to do the big supermarket shop then loan one of Tannenbaum's firepits for extra warmth while stoking up the barbecue to prep fare. Alternatively, time it just right to drop by Belper (under 10 minutes) for the monthly farmers’ market; you can also have a classic tearoom treat in this town, try one of the modern restaurants or catch a flick in the small cinema.

Other spots for seeking sustenance include local pubs within a mile of the site; ask about shire horse and carriage rides from Alderwasley (five minutes’ drive, booking in advance required) to get you there in vintage style...

Everything. Wonderful campsite, this was our third stay and won't be our last. Have taken different friends and family each time and they have all loved every minute. Our kids love the freedom to play in the field as the pitches are round the edges. Fantastic bar, food vans, entertainment. Sharon the owner is fab and can't do enough. Facilities are very clean and covid rules are adhered to constantly. See you soon 👍

We love the location of this campsite and space it provides us to create a base well located between many circle routes. Being at the top of a hill makes it great for a nice fire and views of the lights below and stars above. The owners are friendly and helpful and there are suitable facilities to make our stay comfortable. We have been a couple of times and will be back next year.

    Disliked:

Nothing to dislike for us. Some may find the facilities limited and in need of updating if staying longer than a weekend.

No frills, eclectic, hippy, happy, clean, fires, friendly owner, like campsites used to be. Plenty of space in the middle of the campsite as you only camp round the edge.
A bit of a walk to nearby pub(s) but nice easy lanes and plenty of footpaths to get you there.

    Disliked:

Maybe would be a bit exposed in worse weather if you are not prepared.

  • Herdwick shepherd's hut (adults only)

We booked for a romantic night away from the kids, and we were very happy we did.

I couldn't quite work out the arrangement from the pictures and description so was very happy to find that the shepherd's hut sits in a large paddock which is reserved for private use of the hut. The hut is well decorated and charming with the log stove providing heat, the hut would be cosy all year round.

The separate converted horse box which sits just to the rear of the hut, serves as a separate kitchen area and a cute dining table for two. Its very cute and has all the cutlery etc. needed for two, but my wife did suggest wine glasses would be a nice addition.

The outside table area is about 10 meters in front of the hut and is attached to the rear of the (limited) honesty shop and site toilets. We didn't use this but was nice with the fairy lights. This is also where the private shower is.

It was nice to have a private shower attached too, as the main camp site itself is quite basic, there being only cold water and solar heated poach showering facilities, it was a relief to have this luxury, and ensured the glamping experience!

We really enjoyed sitting by the fire pit outside.

A private toilet and hot running water would be the cherry on the cake, but I'm not really complaining. It is camping after all!

A note for others booking. Wood is provided for fires, and using your own wood is banned. There is a charge for the wood, but its reasonable, so I didn't mind this, but worth knowing in advance.

The actual camping field looked great too, so I think we may return with the family for a camping trip and camp fire.

    Disliked:

From the manager...

This is such a lovely review, thank you. I have added to the site info on Pitchup that it is our wood only and this information should be available on the page soon. I will be putting wine glasses into the Hut today as this is a good point, thank you. We look forward to seeing you again possibly in the camping field next time.

    Disliked:

Knowone to greet you. Had to ring so someone will come over. Had to buy wood from there. Not aloud to bring own wood for fire pit. Very expensive (£11) for 2 bags. Noisy at night. Can hear everyone around you as the campsite is not that big. And some sort of music was playing all night. You could hear a heavy beat. Unsure where it was coming from but the campsite was not peaceful. There was nothing special about this campsite I wouldn't want to go back and i wouldnt want to recommend it too anyone either. I can imagine much better campsites around

Picnics are allowed at Gulliver's and a few fast food restaurants are dotted around among the dodgems, ball pit and Princess Play Area as well. And if the teens are in tow? Promise them a trip taking on the thrills of the Nemesis and Oblivion coasters at Alton Towers 45 minutes away.

Small fry also love flying above the scenery on the cable car in Matlock Bath towards the Heights of Abraham, a park on top of Masson Hill where a little learning’s added into the mix thanks to cave and mine tours.
