General

  • Site of spectacular scenery a mile and a half from the Dove Valley
  • Pasture, woodland and wildlife ponds among the site landscape
  • Trout fishing lake, bar and restaurant

What spectacular natural surroundings are these... Strikingly scenic Rivendale Caravan & Leisure Park is only a mile and a half from the plunging limestone valley of the River Dove, and a few minutes' walk from the viewsome hikes and bike rides of the Tissington Trail.

There's easy access to nearby Alsop, Eaton and Biggin dales and fab fishing rivers nearby too – or maybe you'd prefer to get more watery among the kayaking and sailing of handsome Carsington Water...?

Rivendale's 37 acres also have variety aplenty, with a mixture of pasture, woodland and various wildlife ponds and a wide range of wildflowers and wildlife. A fly fishing lake is here too: if you've never cast off before give it a whirl as this trout lake is just the ticket for beginners with few obstacles around its banks.

Campfires are allowed in certain areas at Rivendale provided they're contained within firepits. The site amenities are in a loo and shower block with underfloor heating (swish) and a launderette.

More? There's also a bar and restaurant in a converted stone stable, open during weekends in low season to serve a selection of hot and cold meals.

Peace, setting, facilities, layout of the site, the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, the size of the pitches, the quirkiness of the different areas, will definitely be coming back with my family. I didn’t try out the cafe but good to know it was there.

Great location with easy access to many beautiful walks, cycle paths and stunning views. Not far from any town (six miles or so) with good availability for replenishing food stocks.

    Disliked:

CCTV recording inside the toilet/shower block is disgusting, and downright wrong! There were two inside the men's and two inside the women's. The ones outside the building are fair enough, but if there is a problem, then there should be attendants. There is a security code to the block which changes midweek which is also monumentally annoying.
The campsite isn't geared to campers, more to caravans. The toilet block is far too far away from the tent area. I felt so sorry for the families with younger children who would have to make the journey at short notice (as smaller children do). I don't mind walking for a shower, but the toilets need to be available nearer. I would expect most caravans and certainly the statics to have fitted bathrooms, tents do not.
The male showers had a distinct lack of clothing hooks on the back of the shower doors as ALL the cubicles had broken hooks for your belongings. The lack of lighting at night is frankly silly. It's all well and good advertising the lack of lighting as a feature if you aren't expected to walk a 500 metre round trip to the toilets (Yes half a kilometre !!) . There could be low level lighting along the rocks to aid your walk. No one expects street lamps but discreet LED lighting would be a huge benefit AFTER sorting the lack of toilets for campers. Why not build a small block near the fire point at the entrance to the tent area?
The "quiet time" was never enforced, and many campers lacked the ability to follow one way signage throughout the park.
So much potential but lacking the modern touches of other sites.

From the manager...

The CCTV inside the buildings is not monitored & covers the communal areas where people are clothed. It is there to prevent inappropriate behaviour and has proven effective in that role in recording child on child bullying, vandalism and so forth, I don't see how the permanent presence of toilet attendants can possibly be less intrusive. The toilet code changes to prevent people from the 4 x 4 field opposite using the facilities & leaving them in a state, the toilets themselves being 170 metres from the tent area - hardly a hike - but you can always bring a portaloo. We advertise the fact that there is low level lighting on the site, and to bring a torch - which most people manage to do & we regularly host star gazers who hold star parties on site as a consequence. I struggle to understand why, having read about the site features you would then come to the site, discover they were as described - and then not be happy with those features or your fellow campers.

level hard pitches, tidy site, friendly reception and shop staff.

    Disliked:

Lack of countryside views, caravan pitch was at the base of high cliffs and between close privet hedges.
Shop and reception opening times were restricted to 9am until 5pm

From the manager...

The shop is open until about 7.30 p.m. on Fridays when we have late arrivals and until 5 p.m. on the other 6 days. We don't pretend to be a supermarket - just a convenience offering milk, bread, eggs, beer, wine - the essentials! Our pitching area is over 1100 feet above sea level & we are open most of the year except for about 3 weeks in January, if there were open views, they would be to the south-west - facing the prevailing wind & everything would be in a pile of tangled wreckage come the first winter storm. Alternatively, you can walk about 200 metres to enjoy the view from either hillside.

Directions

By car:
Satnav: please note that some of our guests have found they are taken into the village of Alsop. Once you are on the A515 Ashbourne to Buxton road, do not turn off until you reach the Rivendale entrance which is accessed directly from the main road.

Travelling north:
Leave the M1 at Junction 25, taking the A52 towards Derby. At the Derby ring road, follow signs for Ashbourne A52. In Ashbourne follow signs for Buxton on the A515. Do not take the Alsop-en-le-dale turn off – simply stay on the A515 for a further half mile and find Rivendale is on the right hand side.

Travelling south:
Leave the M1 at Junction 28

By taxi:
Local taxi firms include Ashbourne Taxis and ACT Taxis.

By bus:
The Bowers bus service 442 and 42 travel past Rivendale Caravan Park.

Local attractions

What lovely land this is: Rivendale Caravan & Leisure Park is well placed to take in the many highlights of the Peak District and Staffordshire, whether your tastes run to old-school hiking and climbing, or new-fangled days out at the likes of Alton Towers.

Walks are very close to base, like the mile and a half hike from the park to the Dove Valley and from there south along the river to the famed Stepping Stones or north to Hartington, or around the dales of Alsop, Eaton and Biggin. The dozens of walks and bike rides of the Tissington Trail can be accessed a couple of hundred metres away.

As well as the on-site trout fishing, anglers can cast off at prime local rivers like the Derwent in Chatsworth Park, the Dove, the Manifold and the Wye, as well as at Carsington Water where there's also kayaking, sailing and windsurfing.

Popular Peak District attractions like the Heights of Abraham falls and the Chatsworth estate are also within easy reach; if you have the kids on hol with you, they'll surely appreciate Rivendale's proximity to the likes of Alton Towers, Gullivers Kingdom and Go Ape too.

Also ask on site about local festivals and events: quite a lot run around here throughout the year.
