Playground

General

  • Award-winning park a short drive from Ashbourne and the Peak District
  • Fishing lake, bird hide, pool, paddling pool, playgrounds and arcade
  • Inn, microbrewery, café bar, supermarket, cricket and entertainment

Callow Top Holiday Park has received lots of awards, and it’s easy to see why: the location is great, and the list of facilities endless.

Location first: this fab park is five minutes' drive from Ashbourne, at the southern gateway to the Peak District National Park; guests can pedal off on the Tissington Trail straight from the grounds. Peak District days aplenty are around too, for ambling around old country piles, getting busy in the countryside with the many active options nearby, or taking the kids to one of the local theme parks...

And the endless list of facilities? From May to September, visitors can callow-n around in the heated outdoor swimming pool and paddling pools; there’s also an amusement arcade, well-designed playgrounds and a games field with football and cricket pitches, plus a volleyball court... And you can hire bikes, bait your hook at the fishing lake or do some twitching in the bird hide.

Eats are also sorted at The Callow Inn, a former drovers’ inn serving trad pub grub and kids' meals as well as – splendidly – Callow Top's own beer from the on-site microbrewery; the park also has a café bar with pool tables and satellite TV. There’s an on-site supermarket selling all the essentials too.

In season, you won’t need to go far for entertainment, with outdoor family discos, live bands, quiz nights and bingo all laid on... the list of stuff to do here is indeed endless...

The park was lovely and clean. Had a lovely meal in the pub. Pool area looked nice. Walkers paradise. Plenty of wild life. Ashbourne is great with a co-op & Waitrose, plenty of pubs 😁

    Disliked:

Some of the pitches where very close together. I wouldn't like to go in peak season as there didn't seem to be enough facilities for the amount of campers. Some of the facilities are only open on the weekends.

    Nice clean site.
    Swimming pool.
    Good facilities.
    Great location.
    Staff fantastic.

    Disliked:

    No private wash cubicles.

Showers, I object to paying 20p when paid for site fees. Mixed male and female and coming out of shower into outdoors then to ladies to use hair drier.

As a motor home user we struggled with getting around local area as one of us had a disability. Too far to walk to catch a bus etc. Cost £10 per day in a taxi.

Pub and restaurant was closed in the week. We wanted to be able to stay local to eat out. So struggled getting into town.

The pitches were very close together. Next time i will ask for one with hedges.

Standard of cleanliness of facilities. Pub and bar are excellent, really good food in terms of quality and choice and reasonably priced too. Staff are all nice and very helpful. Really well maintained site, nice level spacious pitches and a well stocked shop too. Nice walks easily accessible from the site and very close to Ashbourne too. We didn't use the swimming pool but that looks nice too. Nothing to not like about this site, we will definitely be back soon!

Facilities on the campsite. Warmth of the toilets 🤣

    Disliked:

The other families were all in separate fields as when we contacted callow top they said we can’t be put together in groups of 3 or more. Despite the fact on our field alone there were lots of groups of 3 put together. We also did this last year.
We were 6 family’s all with young children. We all gathered at one tent anyway so not sure what difference it makes other than making it difficult for the children to play in each other’s tents Understand the rule but make it the same for everyone.

Local attractions

As it's set in prime Derbyshire territory, there are fab walks all around Callow Top; for pedallers, the Tissington Trail provides a (mainly flat) route out of the grounds right into the Peak District.

The local region has loads to all ages, from the stately Chatsworth House and historic spa towns of Buxton and Matlock, to the chills, spills and thrills of Alton Towers. Visitors of an excitable disposition can keep their adrenaline boosted with watersports, paintballing, zipwiring, high wire assault courses, quad biking and laser tag all available nearby.

Take younger kids on a trip to Gulliver’s Kingdom theme park or a ride in a cable car followed by some cave exploring at the Heights of Abraham. Other options include walking among macaque monkeys in the Monkey Forest at the Trentham Estate, near Stoke on Trent, where they can also make like an ape on the aerial walkways: all that should buy you some privileges at Trentham’s shopping village or lakeside café, surely...?
