What customers say

This is a popular, well-maintained site with excellent facilities, particularly the large children's play area and clean swimming pool, which are highlights for families. It's praised for its stunning Peak District location, with direct access to the Tissington Trail, and friendly, helpful staff. While most visitors have a positive experience, some noted that toilet and shower blocks are a distance from certain pitches and could benefit from modernisation.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely campsite, it is very well maintained with plenty of room between tents. We camped in Dale View which was perfect for us as away from the main area but close enough to the toilets and showers.

You can have a car free day and spend all day on site making use of the park, pool and access to Tissington Trail.

Disliked Need more washing up stations for campers

Camping pod

Liked The pods were clean and offered the basic essentials for ‘camping’, along with bedding and pillows. With a 5 month old, the usual tent camping seemed too tricky, so this was a great alternative. The personal toilet/shower/sink was clean and well-kept. The grounds were well-kept and orderly. The playground was a blessing for young children and the shop on-site was handy too.

Disliked The swimming booking system doesn’t work and this isn’t made clear on the website info. You can’t book swimming until you check in, which isn’t until 4pm with camping pods but is much earlier with tents, so by the time we arrived to check in, all swimming slots were taken. I expressed my disappointment with this to the staff in reception, who did not seem too concerned or flexible, and kept just responding that this is the process in place- like this would help me explain to my 3 year old. However, by chance my sister-in-law was buying milk from the shop the next day and they had just opened another slot up for that day so we managed to get a slot. I’m not sure why this wasn’t offered when I was showing my disappointment about this but had my sister-in-law not have been in the shop at that time, we wouldn’t have known about it. It just doesn’t seem like the most effective system in place and I feel it could be reviewed.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Although I didn't need it, the childrens play area was well thought out, had plenty for them to do and is large enough to cope with plenty of kids.

Availability of the indoor swimming pool

Disliked The casual camping field is on a reasonable slope set away from the facilities, it can take quite a while to walk to them, especially if camping on the far side of the field.
The facilities themselves are insufficient for the amount of people camping and in the pods. There are only 4 showers and 5 cubicles. The showers don't stay on long enough, even if you are trying to save water. There are no seating or shelves in the shower cubicles, just a hook for all your clothes and stuff.
There is only one water tap on the camping field, set at one corner.
The security barrier is never lowered, even during the night.
There is very limited lighting so walking at night can be treacherous.
Toilets were not cleaned often enough and covered in toilet roll, when there was any.
I am sorry to say but this site is not set up for casual camping at all, it appears that it is set up to be a money making exercise only

Local attractions

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park. You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak. More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at the Peak District Mining Museum at Matlock. Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, an indoor riding school, and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
