Take a ride on the steam train travelling on the Leighton Buzzard Railway (15 minutes’ drive). Built in the early 20th century, this narrow-gauge track weaves its way through the countryside and features steep climbs and sharp curves. Before you board the train, you can also check out the collection of heritage locomotives and wagons. The largest zoo in the UK, Whipsnade Zoo (20 minutes) is home to thousands of animals – from aardvarks to zebras, and most beasts inbetween (think elephants, bears and rhinos). There are also themed habitats like the colourful Butterfly House and the Giraffe Heights viewing platform, which brings you up close and personal to the resident giraffes. Inspired by Renaissance French chateau architecture, Waddesdon Manor (25 minutes) was built in the late 1800s. Check out the Rothschild’s collection of paintings (including 17th-century Dutch landscapes) and decorative arts, then head out to the spectacular landscaped gardens.
