Bozedown Boltholes: The veranda and its views (photo added by manager on 29/06/2022)

General

  • Self-contained luxury safari tent near Pangbourne in Berkshir
  • Chiltern Way Extension five minutes’ drive; Caversham Lakes 25 minutes
  • Four-poster bed, kitchen, outdoor cooking area and veranda with views

Fancy staying in a luxury, self-contained safari tent with exclusive use of about an acre of land? Bozedown Boltholes, a five-minute drive from the Berkshire village of Pangbourne, might just be the place for you and your family.

Located on the edge of the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding National Beauty, this dog-friendly site is part of a larger (18-acre) property. When you’re not busy spotting the wild pheasants, muntjacs and deer that lurk about, you can relax on the veranda (with ample seating) and take in far-reaching views across the Thames Valley.

The tent has a well-equipped kitchen, but if you want to fire up the barbecue, the outdoor cooking area (known as The Pheasling) has a traditional stone-ringed campfire with a grill, plus any tools you might need. A converted field shelter nearby has a covered seating area for alfresco meals in all weathers. On cool nights, you can cosy up by the woodburning stove in the tent too. Other luxury touches include a four-poster kingsize bed and a rainshower with plenty of hot water.

There are heaps of trails in the area, including an extension of the Chiltern Way (five minutes’ drive); if you need a little inspiration, the information folder in your unit comes with possible routes and a waterproof Ordnance Survey map that you can use during your stay. The folder also includes cycling routes, so those who prefer two wheels to two legs needn’t feel left out (the site owner used to train for Ironman, and she has suggested different routes for different distances).

There are restaurants, pubs and shops in nearby Pangbourne, just across the pretty Whitchurch Bridge on the Thames.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

At least one of the party members must be aged 25 or over.

Local attractions

An imposing 18th-century pile, Basildon Park (10 minutes’ drive) is worth a visit for its Palladian architecture, its elegant interiors with period furniture and its art collection. The surrounding parkland, which bursts into colour during the warmer months, is a popular spot for dog walks.

There is also a reptile house, where you can get up close and personal with tarantulas, snakes and lizards. And if the kids need to blow off some steam, there’s an adventure playground.

Other ways to keep the kids (or the kid in you) entertained include paintballing at Weekend Warriors (10 minutes) and tumbling on the nets at RedKangaroo Trampoline Park Reading (15 minutes), where there are also giant slides and inflatable obstacle courses.
