  • Peaceful pop-up glamping site at Melchbourne in Bedfordshire
  • Paxton Pits Nature Reserve and Southlake Waterpark 25 minutes’ drive
  • Stylish, cosy bell tents and a field kitchen; pub 20 minutes’ walk
When your idea of heaven is big views, peaceful rural surroundings and lots of animals about the place, you’ll hit gold at The Grove at Melchbourne, a Bedfordshire pop-up glampsite on a livestock farm. Accommodation is in bell tents set in a woodland grove with far-reaching views over the Til Valley, and sheep graze in neighbouring fields. Each tent comes with a firepit and A-frame for flame-grilled cooking at its best. The owners supply a basket of wood, kindling and firelighters so you’re good to get going straight away. The site has spotless showers with hot water, and supplies green toiletries and towels; there are also eco-friendly composting toilets. The field kitchen features a gas-powered barbecue, cooking utensils, crockery, glasses and cutlery. There are also basic condiments available, tea- and coffee-making facilities and seating for balmy summer days. If the weather is playing up, you can cook and eat under cover nearby. Cooler boxes and ice are also available for a small fee. When you fancy a change of scene – or someone else to do the cooking – there’s a good country pub at Melchbourne (20 minutes’ walk), and others at Dean (five minutes’ drive) and Riseley (10 minutes).

Local attractions

The farm is home to cute Shetland ponies, which you can take for mini-treks in the company of their owners. From the glampsite, you can stroll through fields and unspoilt countryside to Strawberry Hill Farm (40 minutes’ walk), host of a decades-old rewilding project that now hosts a healthy population of rare turtle doves, linnets, nightingales and harvest mice. There are riverside and woodland walks to be had in Paxton Pits Nature Reserve (25 minutes’ drive), where you might be lucky and spot muntjac, herons or birds of prey. Advance booking is required for tours of colourful Kathy Brown’s Garden (20 minutes); a visit comprises a short presentation by Kathy herself and a tour of formal plantings and wildflower meadows alive with butterflies. If the kids are with you, you can have fun-filled family days scrambling over the floating obstacle courses at Southlake Waterpark (25 minutes), or test your nerve with speed-driving challenges at Bedford Autodrome (15 minutes).
