Lodge holidays in Northumberland
Keen on the idea of waking up to views of Northumberland’s gorgeous green scenery but not willing to give up on the comfy bed? A lodge or log cabin break is a fine way to combine the two: whether you’re heading towards the coast or aiming inland for somewhere like Kielder Forest Park, we’ve got plenty of options for places where you can mix up a cosy stay with lots of fresh air and views.
Romantic retreat with your partner? Family gathering? Just fancy doing the outdoor-stay thing but don’t have a tent? There are lots of great reasons for booking a lodge holiday, and some excellent places to stay around Northumberland. Read on for our tips on the best areas, the way to find the right one for you, and what to do when you get there.
Where you should stay in Northumberland
-
Family holiday options are plentiful around Northumberland – to make sure you’ve chosen somewhere suitable for kids, use our filters to search for family-friendly Northumberland lodges, or keep an eye out for facilities like a play area. It’s worth picking your area wisely too: a spot like Morpeth is particularly handy for its easy access to the likes of Northumberland Country Zoo, Treasure Island and Dinosaur Encounter Adventure Golf.
-
If your dog needs a holiday too, then a lodge break makes a very sensible option: you’ll have easy access to the outdoors for canine comfort breaks, and your own space where you can all relax together. Much of Northumberland is splendidly welcoming to dogs, but make sure you book a dog-friendly lodge and think about your days out: Bamburgh, for example, is a good spot as both the beach and the (spectacular) castle are open to dogs.
-
Having your own log cabin to yourselves is already a very fine thing, but if you’d like to treat yourselves even more, then check out our range of luxury lodges – or demand somewhere with a hot tub. Fancy some top-notch local eats while you’re lounging in your lodge? Stop by in Craster (near Howick) for something from its famed smokery.
-
Lodge stays don’t all have to be top-end – they can also simply be a convenient way to have an outdoor stay without the need to pitch a tent. If that’s your plan, have a look out for Northumberland camping pods, which tend to be fairly affordable. A camping pod or cabin stay is a handy way to break a long journey around Berwick-upon-Tweed, for example, or a cosy place from which to explore the Northumberland National Park.
-
Northumberland’s forests are pretty special, but so too is its coastline – if you’d like a stay near the beach in the UK without too many crowds, this might be a good place to consider. Alnmouth, Seahouses and Lindisfarne are all great choices – and we’ve compiled a list of Northumberland’s best coast walks to try out too.
What you can do in Northumberland
-
Alnwick Castle often tops the list of the best things to do in Northumberland – and with good reason, as it’s got a lot going for it. It is a film star, after all, having had a starring role as Hogwarts in the first Harry Potter films. Fans of the boy wizard can now take Harry Potter-themed tours, while others explore the grand state rooms or stroll along the Capability Brown walk in the gardens.
-
If you’re off to the countryside to experience the wonders of nature, it’s got to be Kielder Forest Park. There are loads of open-air activities here by day (think mountain biking, fishing and paddleboarding), but it’s also worth exploring the park by night. This is a gold-tier dark sky park, so on a clear night you’ll be treated to some of the best starry views anywhere in the UK.
-
Mix up hiking and history with a ramble along part of Hadrian’s Wall, stopping off at Roman forts like Birdoswald or Vindolanda as you go. Follow up with history of a different vintage at Cragside, a pioneering home powered by hydroelectricity and packed with great gadgets.
Here’s how
Pitchup is designed to make it easy to find and book your break. Each one of our Northumberland lodges has different features and facilities, so personalise your search by using the filters on this page to find a spot that’s right for you. Perhaps you’d like the peace of an adults-only site, or maybe you want somewhere to try out your campfire building skills? Select as few or as many filters as you like and you’ll see all the options that match your needs.
Northumberland is just one of our great locations for a lodge holiday. You might like to expand your search to the whole of North East England – or perhaps even to the whole of England if you’re in need of inspiration (or several holidays…)
