However many times you’ve seen it in pictures or videos, Durdle Door is one of those places that you really need to see for yourself. The huge stone arch on the Dorset coast is one of the UK’s most loved sights – whether you’re admiring it from the beach or swimming/kayaking around its base you’re sure to be wowed by its sheer size. You’ll easily be able to take in those spectacular views as many times as you like when you stay at Durdle Door Holiday Park. As the name suggests, this spacious family-friendly park is just a few minutes’ walk from the arch itself – and there are lots of other great Jurassic Coast sights within easy reach too. From this location (about a mile from the village of West Lulworth) the South West Coast Path links you up with other popular spots like Lulworth Cove, Stair Hole and Man O' War beach (none more than 45 minutes’ walk away). The coast path and many of the local beaches welcome dogs – and so does this park; they’re even allowed to join you in the bar and restaurant, making this an excellent base for those of you travelling with your beloved pets. Main meals, snacks, pizzas and kids’ meals are all on the menu here, along with a good range of hot and cold drinks. Other facilities at the park include a well-stocked shop (handy for your picnic bits and barbecue supplies), a launderette and a couple of excellent play areas – one suitable for toddlers, the other with more challenging adventures for slightly older kids.

Vehicles

  • Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.
  • The shower block will be closed between 11am and 12pm for cleaning daily. During this time, there are toilets available to use in the public car park. Where your touring vehicle is converted, it must have a minimum of a fixed bed/rock and roll bed and built in storage cupboards. Disposable barbecues are not allowed.

Powered grass campervan campsite (sea view)

Liked Great site for walking the coast paths
Perfect for seeing Durdle Door
Site was clean and well maintained shower and facilities were good
The pub on site was also good

Disliked Only thing really was the camper spots have to use the public toliet area or walk a bit further to the campsite ones
Did get busy during the day which affected the cleanness of the public toilets

Liked Very quiet well serviced site. Pitches were hedge lined and very private. Pitches have water, electric and grey water disposal on them. A short walk to Durdle Door which was well worth the walk as it’s very impressive, although not the best for anyone who doesn’t walk well. Showers and toilets were clean and adequate. There was an amazing adventure park for children. We really enjoyed our stay. We would highly recommend and will definitely stay again.

Powered grass campervan campsite (sea view)

Disliked Worst and most overpriced campsite I’ve stayed at

Unfortunately, this was genuinely the worst camping experience I’ve had, and somehow also one of the most expensive at £49 for one night in our campervan.

Even finding reception was unnecessarily difficult. There were no clear signs directing us to reception, so we ended up driving into the paid public car park, which has camera-controlled parking. There is actually a turn for reception before this, but we saw no clear signage telling arriving guests where to go.

The biggest disappointment was the pitch itself. The photographs we saw when booking gave us a completely different impression of the campsite. Our sea-view campervan pitch was on a significant slope and you really need substantial levelling ramps to have any chance of getting a van reasonably level.

Our van was still pointing downhill so badly that I spent the entire night sliding down the bed. I eventually had to sleep the opposite way around because having my head downhill was so uncomfortable. I barely slept all night.

For £49 a night I expected considerably better. The toilet facilities were filthy during our stay, and the food and coffee options were extremely disappointing. Nothing about the experience justified the premium price.

Durdle Door itself is a beautiful part of the country, which makes the experience even more disappointing. Based on our stay, I feel the online presentation did not give an accurate impression of the pitch we actually received.

I’ve stayed at plenty of campsites and never felt compelled to leave a review like this. Unfortunately, this managed to be both the most expensive and the worst camping experience I’ve had.

I would not return and could not recommend it.

You can hire canoes or join guided trips from Lulworth Cove (five minutes’ drive/half an hour’s walk) – there are also paddleboard outings and RIB rides to try out here. Rather stick to dry land? There are plenty of options for walks around here – popular routes take you from the park along the South West Coast Path to Fossil Forest (a favourite fossil-hunting spot), to the Scratchy Bottom cliffs or all the way to Ringstead Bay on a seven-mile hilly coastal trail. For family days out, take a look at the likes of Monkey World (15 minutes’ drive), The Tank Museum (15 minutes) and the steam-driven Swanage Railway (35 minutes). Corfe Castle (25 minutes) and Abbotsbury’s Swannery and Subtropical Gardens (45 minutes) might also be on your radar – or maybe the sandy beach in Weymouth (half an hour)?
