General

  • In an attractive harbour village two minutes' walk from the beach
  • Two miles from the market town of Bridport
  • Pool, paddling pool, adventure playground, climbing wall, bar and café

Dorset apple cake with clotted cream, spankingly fresh seafood, organic cheeses, sumptuous ice cream, lipsmacking local ales – no wonder so many people flock to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s old stamping ground.

The first River Cottage TV shows were filmed at his smallholding near West Bay Holiday Park, where guests are perfectly placed to make the most of the farmers’ markets, restaurants and brewery tours in the pretty neighbouring town of Bridport on Dorset's Jurassic Coast.

Don’t forget your bucket and spade: you can walk straight through the gates of the holiday park into West Bay’s scenic harbour and onto the stunning beach which goes on for miles. There’s no shortage of things to do on site either: wallowing about in the indoor pool, which has a separate toddlers’ pool with a slide, as well as a full-sized flume; bike hire; nature trails; eclectic activities for preschoolers to teens in the well-organised kids’ clubs; a great adventure playground with a climbing wall; amusements, and free evening entertainment for the whole family in the Riverside Club.

There are good basic amenities on site (a launderette, shop and off licence, and a cash machine) as well as a bar and café with harbour views if you tire of the washing up.

As a single female staying in a tent I felt very safe, I met lots of other friendly caravaners. I was the only person in a tent at the beginning of October! The pitch was a good size, I was able to park my car next to my tent, electric hook up was brilliant.
I met the staff at ParkDean they were all really friendly and helpful, they said if I had any problems I could ring the office and they would send someone up to my pitch!
I didn’t use the entertainment as I was visiting friends and family, I spoke to other people who used the facility’s and they enjoyed the night time entertainment and swimming pool. The toilets and showers were good, drinking water very close to tent.

Nothing really, some works going on on the sea front but not worth moaning about, has to be done sometime.

I stayed before earlier in year & it was fine. This time however the pitch I was on was ok, but the next two were so small they were forced to encroach onto mine. Also the day before I arrived the next pitches electric hook up damaged / broke so they were using mine whilst awaiting the maintenance. They never came !!!!!! This meant that when I took my supply back the others were left with no electric. This was still the position when I left the site!!!. Also the lighting was very poor in some areas, & a lot of people were complaining about it. I must say the last time I stayed it was fine though & it didn't really make my stay that bad. Just an observation. Its great for the location of the village etc & the facilities are fine.

The shower block facilities were impeccably clean and the site was very well maintained. You can't beat this park for location either.
There is a very good local bus service which travels along the Jurassic coast.
It cost £60 for a 3 night stay with electric hook up in September which was fantastic value for money.
    Weekend entertainment was fun.

    Disliked:

Parkdean staff singing on the Thursday evening was pretty poor!!

Local attractions

Starting on the doorstep in West Bay itself: you could go fossil hunting underneath the sandstone cliffs, crabbing in the harbour, take a boat tour of the Jurassic Coast, or head out into the big blue yonder on a sea fishing trip; then there’s golf, paragliding, scuba diving, watersports, and excellent walking along the coastal paths...

Take a break from feeding yourself up on all the gorgeous local produce to hand feed the birds at Abbotsbury Swannery, where the 600 nesting mute swans make for an impressive sight (and plenty of hungry beaks); there are also award-winning gardens and a kids' farm to explore.

The coastal resort of Lyme Regis has been drawing the crowds since time immemorial and is well worth a visit; other historical gems in West Dorset include the Jacobean manor house of Mapperton, set amongst topiary, terraced gardens and rolling hills; Forde Abbey and gardens; a cluster of castles; and the giant chalk man in the hillside at Cerne Abbas.

Alternatively, if there are animal addicts in your party, they'll go ape for the 240-plus inhabitants of Monkey World and potty for the penguins and underwater specimens at Weymouth Sea Life Park.
