  • Spacious and scenic Northumberland site two miles south of Hexham
  • Hadrian's Wall and Northumberland National Park within easy reach
  • Dog-friendly pitches with views across Hexham Racecourse
If you’re heading to Hexham and hoping to find a suitable spot nearby for an outdoor stay, take a look at Hexham Racecourse Caravan Site. This spacious park is two miles south of Hexham and well placed for visits to the market town and time spent exploring the scenic Northumberland surroundings. You don’t have to be a horse lover to stay here – but you’ll probably particularly appreciate it. As the name suggests, this site is part of the town’s racecourse (known as ‘Britain’s most scenic racecourse’), with pitches right next to the course for a real sense of atmosphere on race days. Things get pretty lively during those race days, but at other times this is a very peaceful place to stay, with lovely views over the countryside and a south-facing aspect to give you a full day of sunlight. The main amenities block has a laundry room as well as ladies’ and gents’ toilets and showers along with accessible facilities. You’re welcome to bring one or two dogs along provided they’re kept on a lead at all times on site. Getting out and about, it’s a five-minute drive to Hexham for shops, pubs and restaurants, or about half an hour to Newcastle. Hadrian’s Wall is very close by too, as are the fabulous scenery of the Northumberland National Park and North Pennines National Landscape.

Disliked Location wasn't for us, too windy in a tent

From the manager: Delighted to see you have given such a good score and you would visit again and recommend to friends.
Unfortunately we are at 730ft above sea level and are prone to catching the wind but some things are worth putting up with to enjoy the beautiful views of the Northumbrian countryside.

Disliked Dogs not kept on leads at all times ,

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the feedback.
As you are aware we have no problem with allowing dogs on site or owners bringing them to the races but we do insist they are kept on a lead at all times which would appear in this instance the owner has ignored. We do strive to keep the site tidy but not helped when people don't abide by the rules.
We are pleased to see the experience has not put you off visiting again and would recommend the site to your friends.

Disliked Tokens for the washer

From the manager: Delighted to see you would be prepared to return and recommend to your friends.
I am afraid implemented a token system for the washer and drier as it's use was being abused.

Liked Location and views. Facilities impeccably clean. Made welcome on arrival. Helpful with loan of longer ehu cable. Nice to be able to use laundry facilities.

Disliked Showers limited space, only one hook and flooded floor due to shower spray angle.
Dog poo bin is not obvious. It would be better if washer and dryer were coin or card operated rather than token as staff not on site permanently.
Main issue was it was not possible to fill Campervan tank with water using a hose. could not get close enough to tap to use my 10m hose.

Local attractions

Hexham (five minutes' drive) is a lovely place for a wander, with lots of independent shops and cafés as well as its Grade I-listed abbey and the Hexham Old Gaol museum. Just a little further east is Corbridge (15 minutes), best known for the Corbridge Roman Town English Heritage site. That’s just one of the sections of Hadrian’s Wall you can visit nearby – other top spots include Vindolanda and Housesteads Roman Fort (both 25 minutes). Heading to the east, you’ll reach Newcastle in about half an hour to see the famed Tyne Bridge and visit the city’s numerous museums and arts venues. There's also the option of some time on the beach at Whitley Bay (45 minutes’ drive). For a total change from urban life, set off to explore the North Pennines National Landscape or Northumberland National Park – for the latter you may like to start at The Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre (25 minutes) for an introduction to the area. There are lots of excellent places to visit, but a highlight must be Kielder Water (an hour), for its watersports and dark sky observatory.
