  • Spacious and scenic Northumberland site two miles south of Hexham
  • Hadrian's Wall and Northumberland National Park within easy reach
  • Dog-friendly pitches with views across Hexham Racecourse
If you’re heading to Hexham and hoping to find a suitable spot nearby for an outdoor stay, take a look at Hexham Racecourse Caravan Site. This spacious park is two miles south of Hexham and well placed for visits to the market town and time spent exploring the scenic Northumberland surroundings. You don’t have to be a horse lover to stay here – but you’ll probably particularly appreciate it. As the name suggests, this site is part of the town’s racecourse (known as ‘Britain’s most scenic racecourse’), with pitches right next to the course for a real sense of atmosphere on race days. Things get pretty lively during those race days, but at other times this is a very peaceful place to stay, with lovely views over the countryside and a south-facing aspect to give you a full day of sunlight. The main amenities block has a laundry room as well as ladies’ and gents’ toilets and showers along with accessible facilities. You’re welcome to bring one or two dogs along provided they’re kept on a lead at all times on site. Getting out and about, it’s a five-minute drive to Hexham for shops, pubs and restaurants, or about half an hour to Newcastle. Hadrian’s Wall is very close by too, as are the fabulous scenery of the Northumberland National Park and North Pennines National Landscape.

What customers say

Gleaming facilities, lovely views and welcoming staff make this a popular spot. Pitches are big, though a bit lumpy for some. Showers can get a bit wet, and electrics can be a trek, but most folks loved it and would come back.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Location & facilities.

Disliked Challenging walk in to Hexham.
Must be fit to navigate the big hill on return if walking.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Unfortunately we are unable to alter our location, the plus side to being on top of the hill is the beautiful views of the Northumbrian Countryside you enjoy when you are on site.
Am pleased to see the location will not prevent you from returning or recommending to your friends.
Thank you for taking the time to post a review.

Liked Cheap laundry facilities. Good wheelchair accessible toilet and shower facilities.

Disliked Wheelchair access difficult or not likely for the laundry and washing up room

From the manager: Thank you for taking time to write a post following your stay at the racecourse campsite.
Delighted to see you are prepared to visit again and recommend to friends.
Somewhat confused about your comments on wheelchair access to laundry room as it is serviced by the same ramp which provides access to the accessible toilet.
We look forward to welcoming you back.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Clean toilet, shower areas.
Plenty of bins
Dog friendly

Disliked Advertised as a quiet site yet for the 2 nights we stayed, there were 2 separate big groups (5 plus families together) up on the field near play park, both of which had music blasting and making loud noise past 12am. The owner was told but didn’t do anything.
The ground was uneven for tents, we had an indoor slide inside the tent

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Further to your comments, we weren't aware of the music problem however the groups have been spoken to and informed there is to be no music played at all and we we have put measures in place to prevent this from happening.
We are sorry your stay was ruined by campers who showed no regard for others on site.

Liked Good sized pitch, good facilities and showers

Disliked Location wasn't for us, too windy in a tent

From the manager: Delighted to see you have given such a good score and you would visit again and recommend to friends.
Unfortunately we are at 730ft above sea level and are prone to catching the wind but some things are worth putting up with to enjoy the beautiful views of the Northumbrian countryside.

Local attractions

Hexham (five minutes' drive) is a lovely place for a wander, with lots of independent shops and cafés as well as its Grade I-listed abbey and the Hexham Old Gaol museum. Just a little further east is Corbridge (15 minutes), best known for the Corbridge Roman Town English Heritage site. That’s just one of the sections of Hadrian’s Wall you can visit nearby – other top spots include Vindolanda and Housesteads Roman Fort (both 25 minutes). Heading to the east, you’ll reach Newcastle in about half an hour to see the famed Tyne Bridge and visit the city’s numerous museums and arts venues. There's also the option of some time on the beach at Whitley Bay (45 minutes’ drive). For a total change from urban life, set off to explore the North Pennines National Landscape or Northumberland National Park – for the latter you may like to start at The Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre (25 minutes) for an introduction to the area. There are lots of excellent places to visit, but a highlight must be Kielder Water (an hour), for its watersports and dark sky observatory.
