  • Simple, well-kept North Yorkshire site under a mile from Huby
  • A 20-minute drive to York or the Howardian Hills
  • Dogs and kids welcome; good bus services from the village
If you like the idea of a rural break but also value the convenience of having village facilities within a couple of minutes’ drive, find yourself a space at Fox Covert. This North Yorkshire site is in a proper countryside spot surrounded by green farmland, and it’s just a mile from the village of Huby – for when you feel the need for a shop, or want to visit a pub (with food), a Chinese takeaway or a fish and chip shop. The village is a handy hub for various things, but it’s not the only urban option around here: the market town of Easingwold is about 10 minutes’ drive away (for more pubs, shops and places to eat, plus a twice-weekly market), and it will take you about 20 minutes to get to York to visit its historic attractions. Both destinations can be reached by bus from the village. If it’s all about the rural activities for you, you’ll also be well served here: there’s fishing just up the road at Redwood Park (five minutes’ drive), and plenty of scenic walks in the Howardian Hills National Landscape (20 minutes). You can catch up with fluffy alpacas and impressive birds of prey at nearby animal parks, or seek out historic attractions – from Roman sites, to grand stately homes. Back at base, it’s a laidback setup with simple and well-maintained facilities in the form of a couple of toilets and showers, plus plenty of space for kids and dogs to run around.

This is a peaceful, spacious campground with friendly, accommodating owners, especially Val. Guests enjoyed the natural setting and proximity to local towns. Facilities are basic but clean, with upgrades planned. Some noted traffic noise and limited restrooms during peak times. Fire pits are available to rent.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Showers were very clean, the owner of the land was really helpful, lent us a washbowl when needed, recommended beautiful local walks and provided us a lovely barbecue. The sheep next to the site were so cute and friendly and the location was perfect. Easingwold is a bus ride away (the 40) so even without a car we were able to get around and see the nature and parks.

Local attractions

With more than 100 residents, the York Bird of Prey Centre (five minutes’ drive) is a top spot to learn about the habits of owls, hawks, eagles and other raptors. In addition to flight displays (where audience participation is encouraged), the centre runs a number of experiences that allow visitors to handle the birds, including walks and photography days. If you’re into dramatic ruins, check out those of Byland Abbey (15 minutes), built in the 12th century and closed by Henry VIII in 1538, after which it fell into decline. The scale of this religious complex is humbling, and there’s also an impressive collection of medieval floor tiles. The Minster in York (20 minutes) is a soaring edifice with remarkable stained-glass windows and far-reaching views from the Central Tower. Stroll along the narrow medieval street known as the Shambles, then head to the National Railway Museum to see vintage locomotives or to the Jorvik Viking Centre to delve into the early history of the city.
