  • Secluded riverside site 20 minutes' drive from Oxford
  • Wild camping, wild swimming and kayaking
  • Cooking facilities, campfire area and farm shop on site
Wild swimming in Oxfordshire… what a clever notion. D'Oyleys Farm is an excellent option if you’re visiting Oxford and want a bit of adventure along the way: this laidback place has a riverside setting, a wild camping vibe and the means for outdoor cooking and picnics at its lush little island. The farm is in a secluded setting by the Thames, with pitch numbers carefully managed so that guests have loads of room and plenty of peace. There are four access points where you can plunge into the river for a spot of wild swimming – it's a little muddy in places (getting in and out is all about the sit and slide…) but it's fab for cooling off. A highlight of the site is the little island, where the D'Oyleys Farm team has set up the ‘BBQ shack' with cooking facilities, woodburning stove, deck space and a campfire area, where you can sizzle up supper on the woodfired cooking stove. And another, also excellent, highlight? D'Oyleys is home to a farm shop and prepares breakfast packs (bacon, sausages and eggs) and barbecue packs (lamb chops, chicken drumsticks, steaks and burgers) for guests, all home-produced and all easily sorted by ordering before you arrive – use the details in your booking confirmation email. When (if) you crave a bit of city life, Oxford is half an hour away by bus via the service running from the village 15 minutes’ stroll away, or about 20 minutes by car. The farm is four miles from Junction 7 of the M40, so it’s easy to get out and about from here by car too. The local pub (dog- and welly-friendly) is 15 minutes' walk away.

What customers say

This peaceful, spacious campsite near Oxford offers a back-to-nature experience. Guests praised the large, private pitches, beautiful riverside setting with swimming, and friendly hosts. Basic but maintained facilities. Minor noted drawbacks were the walk to amenities and compost toilets, but it's highly recommended for tranquility.

Eco primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked We liked the spacious pitches, the beautiful views, the red kites, an own eco toilet, the nice hot showers, the friendly owner and the dogs, the farm shop. Such a clever concept, wild camping but somehow it felt luxurious. Everything was so well thought out. Big compliments for the owners!

Liked We loved the setting, the simplicity and ease of checking in and out of this campsite. The owner was friendly and helpful. The access to open water swimming was fab. Everything was clean and tidy.

Disliked Depending on where you are located, there can be quite a long walk to the toilets and showers and water tap.

Freedom primitive grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Really lovely hosts. Very few restrictions & just a relaxed, self-contained set up. Such generous pitch sizes, it felt like we had the field to ourselves and gave the kids freedom to play. Stunning location & river with places to explore.

Freedom primitive grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked There’s nothing my daughters and I didn’t like about D’Oyleys Farm. From the moment of arrival and meeting Fi, she could not do enough for us to make sure we had the best stay we could. My daughters, a horse mad and Fi was extremely patient and attentive to please my daughters and letting them pet her two beautiful horses and dogs.
Once at our pitch, Fi came round to make sure we settled in okay and if there was anything else she could do to help us.
The river to swim in was a small walk away from where we were pitched, it was all just perfect and I cannot thank Fi enough for the lasting memories. My daughters will have of our stay.

Local attractions

Oxford might be your first stop: take the 20-minute drive or 30-minute bus ride to the city centre for wanders around the university buildings and museums, potters around the market, and, for Tolkien fans, a reverent pint in his fave pub The Eagle and Child. The farm is between the Cotswolds and Chiltern Hills National Landscapes for hikes and scenic strolls in either direction; wanderers could also venture off to Stratford-upon-Avon (an hour and five minutes' drive) for book-themed activities or Royal Leamington Spa (an hour and five minutes). Staying close to home, a footpath leads directly from the site to local villages. There are a few National Trust sites around too, like Watlington Hill (20 minutes), Greys Court (35 minutes) and Nuffield Place (20 minutes), which are all in the Chiltern Hills National Landscape.
