  • Rural Bedfordshire site with 100 acres of parkland
  • Bedford 15 minutes’ drive; Santa Pod Raceway 35 minutes
  • Lakeside café, bar and restaurant (opening times vary); hot showers
Set in 100 acres of landscaped parkland in rural Bedfordshire, the pitches at Box End Park are just the spot for sporty families, first-time campers… and all outdoorsy folks, really. The peaceful, activity-filled site has two spring-fed, purpose-built lakes with bookable activities including a giant aqua park, cable wakeboarding, paddleboarding and disc golf. All the pitches are on flat, well-drained grassland, and the site has its own dedicated heated toilet block with hot showers, as well as outdoor washing-up sinks. If you need them, additional showers are located in the main clubhouse and are shared with the watersports facilities. When you need to refuel, head over to the on-site bar, restaurant and café (opening hours vary, so please check ahead). If you'd rather flip your own food on the grill, barbecues are permitted off the ground at the pitches, but no campfires/firepits are allowed. This is a quiet, family-friendly site with a strict no-noise policy after 10.30pm, so perhaps it’s not the place for you if you’re after a wild nightlife – having said that, the historic market town of Bedford is only 15 minutes’ drive away, with its healthy helping of pubs and restaurants.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Spacious pitches! Lovely views no matter the weather. Cleanliness was top tier. Nature walk around box park was brilliant too. We left very well rested and our little doggie was very happy too. We tried the on site café, coffee was very good. We met a few staff and they were lovely. I only ever camped a few times in my life and felt very safe here.

Disliked Drinking water is positioned between electric pitches, it's a bit awkward going on someone else's pitch to fill up a bottle. We went to empty pitches where possible and also had the tap water from the 'clean up/dish' area. But apart from that everything was perfect.

From the manager: Hi Vicki,

Thank you so much for such a thoughtful and detailed review — we’re delighted to hear how much you enjoyed your stay with us.

It’s wonderful to know you made the most of the surroundings, the nature walk, and our on-site café, and that both you and your dog had a relaxing break. We’re especially pleased you felt safe and well looked after — that means a lot to us. I’ll be sure to pass your kind comments on to the team as well.

Thank you as well for your feedback regarding the drinking water points. Our communal taps are a typical campsite setup, though we appreciate your point about access between electric and non-electric pitches and will keep this in mind as we continue to improve the guest experience.

We’re so glad you had such a positive experience overall and hope to welcome you back again soon.

Liked Proximity to toilets and showers , spacious pitches easy enough to find and close to major road for onward journey

Disliked Water not hot enough a dish washing station, free wifi adequate for phone but not for firestick, however you can buy premium wifi at a reasonable price, we stayed 2 days and I didnt notice this until 2nd day, thought bar was rather pricey didnt have food

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi John,

Thank you for your lovely review and for highlighting what you enjoyed about your stay — we’re really pleased to hear the pitch size, location, and easy access worked well for you.

We appreciate your feedback on a few points as well. The dishwashing water can feel a little cooler during peak usage times, though it is regularly monitored — we’ll continue to keep an eye on this to ensure it’s as comfortable as possible for guests.

Our complimentary campsite WiFi is new for this season and is designed for general browsing, messaging and light use, and we do offer a premium upgrade for streaming, which is outlined in the welcome information pack — we’ll look into how to make this clearer to guests joining us for their stay.

In terms of pricing, we aim to offer a range of options across our bar, restaurant, and café to suit different preferences and price ranges, but we understand everyone’s expectations can vary.

Thanks again for your helpful and balanced feedback — it’s great to hear you’d recommend us and we hope to welcome you back again soon.

Liked The pitches are very spacious and level. The electric hook up facility is well done. The wash block etc was very clean and cozy warm, just what we needed. We enjoyed watching those taking part in the water sports.

Disliked The road noise was quite loud and disturbing for us.

From the manager: Hi there,

Thanks for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful review—we’re really glad to hear you enjoyed the spacious pitches, electric hook-ups, and our warm, clean facilities. It’s also great that you were able to enjoy watching the water sports during your stay.

It’s lovely to hear you were glad you stayed with us, even with the chilly weather, and we hope your tent box trial was a helpful learning experience for future trips. A gazebo sounds like a great addition for a bit of extra shelter next time!

Thank you again for your kind and constructive feedback—we’d love to welcome you back in warmer conditions for an even more enjoyable stay.

Take care and all the best,

Liked Great customer service over the phone never actually saw anyone whilst there as it wasn’t busy , we were only ones there
Not a problem but found it weird that there were permanent residents living there (in campers with awnings etc) right next next to the showe block
Shower block was immaculate , but as I said said it wasn’t a busy time
Hopefully more bins will be provided at busier times
Just a little warning , as it’s flat ground it was very windy
As we came in April it was chilly at night so was disappointing that we couldn’t have a fire pit as not allowed

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Mandy,

Thank you so much for your thoughtful review—we really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.

It’s fantastic to hear that our phone communication hit the mark, especially as your stay was a self check-in and check-out. We aim to make everything as smooth and stress-free as possible, so it’s great to know that worked well for you.

We do have some longer term caravans on-site. They’re a lovely group who help create a friendly, welcoming, and safe environment for everyone staying with us.

We’re especially pleased you found the shower block immaculate—our housekeeping team put a lot of effort into maintaining high standards, with thorough cleans morning and night, so your feedback will mean a lot to them.

Regarding bins, we currently have several located around the site, including near the toilet block, at the entrance, and in the car park. These are emptied regularly throughout the week and daily during busier periods, but we’ll certainly keep your comments in mind as we continue to improve.

As we are a lakeside campsite, it can get quite breezy at times, particularly on flatter ground. And we do understand the disappointment around fire pits, especially on chilly evenings; however, this policy is in place to ensure the safety of all our guests. BBQs are allowed though if they are raised off the ground.

Thank you again for your kind words and helpful feedback. We hope to welcome you back again soon!

Local attractions

One of the highlights at the Forest Centre and Millennium Country Park (15 minutes’ drive) is the Wetlands Nature Reserve, inhabited by shrews, otters and butterflies. A circular trail skirts the lake (with bird hides), going past woodlands and reedbeds where you might spot different birds depending on the season. Falcons, owls and eagles are among the winged residents at Herrings Green Activity Farm and Bird of Prey Centre (20 minutes). Here, in addition to witnessing flying displays (accompanied by an informative but entertaining commentary), visitors can have their picture taken with the birds. Santa Pod Raceway (35 minutes) is a racetrack with a lively programme of events: from modified and classic car shows, to what they call ‘Run What You Brung’ days, where they open the track to the general public and their cars (or bikes). The place is best known for drag racing, a thrilling acceleration contest over a short distance.
