Touring & camping site

  • Peaceful farm site with a pond and walking paths
  • A 10-minute drive to Barnard Castle and the Yorkshire Dales outskirts
  • Indoor soft play centre, café and farm shop on site
There should be plenty to keep the kids busy at Thorpe Farm Centre, a Co. Durham site within 10 minutes' drive of the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and 20 minutes from the edge of the North Pennines National Landscape. If dipping and nature spotting at the peaceful pond doesn't sway them, seeing the animals in their paddocks or the many walking paths straight from the site surely will. The farm is also home to the 18th-century Peel House, which has a gift shop and The Courtyard Café serving breakfast and Sunday lunch. The farm shop also sells fresh local produce including bread, milk, bacon, sausages and eggs, and has a (rather unusual but possibly handy) reclamation barn selling furniture, antiques and collectables. The Thorpe Farm Centre indoor soft play area adds another space for kids to let off steam. It has a two-tiered soft play structure designed for kids up to eight years old, surrounded by comfortable seating where parents can rest their feet. Facilities on site include toilet and shower blocks with disabled access, fresh water and a chemical disposal unit. Dogs are very welcome but must be kept on leads while on site.

Liked What a beautiful site. Loved the reclamation barn, farm animals & walks. Lovely cafe & shop, with lots to do if you have children.
Immaculate shower / utility block and everyone was welcoming & friendly. This was our very 1st stop with a new motorhome and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.

Liked toilet block was clean

Disliked The A66 dual carriage way is meters from the row of tent pitches. It was exceptionally noisy. The tent pitches were also on a slope and uneven ground.

Power optional cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Lovely big entrance area to pull the caravan in when checking in at reception and plenty of space to get down to the pitch.

The kids absolutely loved the tyre swings and there was so much space for a little kick about or a game of frisbee.

Very quiet site with spotless facilities and we even appreciated the warden asking if all was OK as he came past.

Disliked Nothing! The traffic noise is fine, it became just like white noise at night.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Lovely site, very dog friendly, showers were great and the activities for kids was great (animal sanctuary and maize maze), farm shop on site was good and reasonably priced. Only 10 - 20 mins to Barnard castle.

Disliked Need to be aware that it is on the A66 so road traffic is constant.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Lovely place to camp, large pitches with electric hook up and water, the kids loved the tyre swings and play area near the shop. Only a 5 minute drive to Barnard Castle. Lovely little animal enclosure. Friendly staff. Clean showers and toilets including a baby change. Family/toy room in the shower block with board games and toys, 2 sofas & a bean bag chair. Would definitely return.

Disliked Only downside is it is very close to the A66 and the noise from the traffic gets noisy around 6am. Nothing else to complain about.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked The centre was excellent with plenty to do for the kids. Farm, Maze, play area and tyre swings. The centre was very clean and tidy. The toilet/shower area was also very clean and a great facility with a lounge area and TV.

Disliked The only bad thing was the A66. This was within 10 meters of the tent pitch and has constant traffic noise. The toilet block was a little distance but only became an issue during the night.
A toilet/shower block and electric hook-ups on the top field, away from the road and the site would be perfect.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for your thoughtful review. We’re delighted to hear your family enjoyed the centre, play areas, maze, and facilities — it’s lovely to know the kids had such a great time. We’re also glad you found everything clean and well-kept. Thank you for your comments about the road noise and facilities on the top field, and your feedback is really valuable as we continue to improve. We hope to welcome you and your family back again in the future.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Friendly and helpful staff
Excellent toilets and showers
Great for the kids - plenty for them to do
Lovely farm shop
Animal paddock was great

Disliked Grass tent pitches are located too close to A66 - very noisy all day and night. Due to this I would not consider returning unless pitches were relocated which is such a shame because everything else was spot on.

Grass pitches are very uneven and on a slope.
Would have given this 10/10 if it was not for the road noise.
