Solway Holiday Village: Reception

General

  • Family site over 130 acres of parkland, well placed for Hadrian's Wall
  • Within walking distance of Silloth and close to the Galloway Hills
  • Kids' clubs, play centres, bars and indoor pool with spa

Off to the Lake District, the Scottish Borders or Hadrian's Wall – and want a park with heaps to do on site for your little centurions?

Nearby Solway Holiday Village should fit the bill, as it's a Hagans Leisure park packed with activities and is close to the England/Scotland border with opps for many days out in either land: it's within walking distance of Victorian seaside town Silloth on the Solway Firth with over 20 miles of coastline to cast off at, close to kitesurfing and windsurfing at Allonby and a quick hop around the Firth to Scotland’s Galloway Hills.

The park is spread spaciously over 130 acres of good-looking parkland with heaps of things to do for all sizes and tastes: kids can submerge themselves in the kids’ club and outdoor and indoor play centre, while the whole family can dive into the all-weather sports facilities, family bars, entertainment complex with Sky Sports and fab heated indoor pool with spa. Entertainment passes for the indoor pool and kids' club are included in the pitch price.

Not sure where to start? Pile the crew into Solway’s tourist train for a squint around: you’ll also spot the amusement arcade and tennis courts (small charge applies), and up-to-date amenities including free heated showers, covered dishwashing area, water points, coin launderette, bistro and takeaway.

If you’re bringing your tent, tourer or motorhome to Solway, the touring area is only five minutes’ walk from reception and is flat and grassy with car parking available beside each pitch.

This site is a member of Hagans Leisure group.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Same-sex male or female groups under 30 years of age are not accepted.

Please specify the type and size unit when making a booking.

Telephone manner of staff and man on the alocation of pitches very helpful, staff in general pleasant. Grounds are lovely... lots to dobut no play ground near camping a shame. Entertainment for children through they day was great.

    Disliked:

Pitches very very stoney for tents an a little too packed in. We were fortunate in size of pitch but next tent was then pitched only around 5ft away... not ideal. Unfortunately however the toilet and shower facilities fell extremely short on cleanliness and standard. Even more so considering the covid situation, floors continuously dirty, no cleaning schedule upfor regular cleaning. Dirty mops standing in the corner in dirty water, dirty water from ppl showering gathered in shower gutters. We did not use the shower facility due to this, having been to other sites and seeing their regime and cleanliness i would not allow my family to use them.. we used the toilets as we had no choice.

Great flat campsite so could easily explore on our bikes and we could also cycle into silloth straight down the promenade which was safe for children
Great entertainment on the sat night for kids shame they don’t do this for at least two nights over the weekend

    Disliked:

The whole site is somewhat tired and needs updating. Food onsite was awful but there’s a good takeaway that delivers right to your pitch from silloth called Marios

We had a great time from the book in with Amanda and once on site we had a visit from Les who made us feel welcome and offering any assistance we may need. Everything from the restaurant to the swimming pool was an all round great experience.

Jane and I will be back.

    Disliked:

Just the Bistro it was more of a sports bar than a nice quiet place to eat and have a drink.

Dated site, only option for us was corner of wet touring field or hard standing which was effectively a piece of dereliction car park next to the tennis courts. Very poor for the £44 per night price tag, left immediately and found a lovely site 20mins away. We are supposed to be getting a refund?!

Lack of toilets and the poor upkeep of the toilet block. In bad repair, no toilet paper, not very clean and poor water supply. All especially important in times of covid.

Plenty of space on the pitches and fairly quiet as we parked well away from the toilets in a separate area.

    Disliked:

Toilets were disgusting, the women’s had 2 sinks which were full of tape. The men’s had poo all over in one of the toilets and again 2 of the sinks were out of use. Good job we had a porta loo as I wouldn’t have used them and I’m not a fussy person so they really were bad.

Local attractions

On the English side of the Firth, Solway guests can reach the north-western lakes of the Lake District National Park, day trips to Carlisle and the hills and stargazing of Northumberland National Park. On the Scottish side, you could hike the Galloway Hills, run away to Gretna or drive further afield to urban days out at Edinburgh or Glasgow.

(To see it all at once, take a trip to championship Solway Golf Course where you can tee around to views of the Lakeland Fells, Galloway Hills and across to the Isle of Man.)

Moseying towards Northumberland (stop off at Carlisle Castle and The Lanes shopping centre on the way), friends, Romans and countrymen can walk as much of the Hadrian’s Wall Path as they can manage: it’s the north of England’s most visited tourist attraction and most of it runs along the Solway Firth on its way to Northumberland.

Happily for such a family-centred site, kiddish fun is all around Solway Holiday Village too: farm park Orton Grange, getting open-mouthed at the fish and other inhabitants at Lake District Coast Aquarium, or going on a hop around award-winning World of Beatrix Potter.

Must see

  • John Paul Jones Cottage Museum & Visitor Centre (13.3 kilometres)
  • World Famous Old Blacksmith's Shop Centre (24.8 kilometres)
