May 31 2012 Posted by Lewis Shields

Ready to head off the beaten track this summer? Looking for your next UK adventure and want to learn a new skill or try a new experience? Pitchup.com has put together a round-up of survival style adventures that will see you scavenging for edible foliage, or shooting a bull's eye, and recommends some top places to stay:

  • Forage for your supper

Fat Hen, West Cornwall's wild food foraging and cooking school, is run by professional forager, ecologist and cook, Caroline Davey, and offers unique courses taking guests on a journey from soil to plate. Forage for the very best of wild Cornish produce and learn to cook exciting modern wild food dishes - Caroline's expert botanical knowledge, combined with the talents of Fat Hen's professional chefs, make this is a foodie experience to remember. Wild Food Taster Days are priced at £75 per person, including a three course lunch

Test out new found skills over the chimineas, or fire baskets, at Chy Carne Camping and Touring Park. Many pitches at this spacious site overlook the beautiful Kennack Sands, which has the highest award for bathing water quality in the UK. Pitches are priced from £14 per night.

  • Deep sea fishing

Based at Brancaster Staithe on the north Norfolk coast, an area with a long maritime tradition, Norfolk Fishing Trips and Charters' sea fishing excursions see guests bring home a mackerel or three for the barbeque. Skipper, chef and lifeboat man Chris King knows these waters well and will take guests to prime fishing spots. A half day's mackerel and bass fishing costs £35.

Bed down for the evening in the luxury tipis and bell tents at Magical Camping, at Park Farm Campsite, Swanton Morley. With comfortable beds, luxury bedding, carpeted floors and soft lighting, through to the essentials of outdoor fire-bowls, cooking equipment, utensils and anything else that is required to dish up those tasty mackerel. Tipis and yurts sleeping up to four people cost from £85 per night or £440 per week.

  • Bows and arrows

Blandford Farm in Dorset is an adventurer's heaven, and their full archery set up allows any budding young archer the chance to hone their skills, and aim for the bull's eye. Fully instructed sessions cost £20 per lesson.

Stay locally at Redlands Farm, which offers adventurers real camping with a reasonable price tag. There are limited frills at this friendly, farm-based site but guests can use the showers, bar and sports facilities in the sports centre over the road for free. The farm shop sells delicious local produce, and they provide hearty, home-cooked breakfasts, so there is little need to use those bows to put food on the table. Pitches are priced from £12.50 and farm breakfasts for just a little bit extra...

  • Run wild

Ever wanted to run free o'er hills, dales, valleys and even coastline? Barefoot Running UK and Yoga4Runners UK are 'running' a weekend course on the Isle of Wight, solely dedicated to the merits of running barefoot. Participants will learn a specific programme designed to target, balance and strengthen the body of a runner. The programme is priced at £120 for a weekend's tuition.

Stay at Ninham Country Holidays, a beautiful camping and caravanning site just a short distance from the sandy beaches of Shanklin. There is a heated outdoor pool so guests can relax and rest those active limbs. Pitches are priced from £10 per night.
