Here for the trains? Mosey over to the Western Mining and Railroad Museum (a five-minute walk) to learn about the town’s Amtrak-related heritage, taking a look at the Big John statue – said to be the world’s tallest coal miner – while you’re at it. Get to the ghost town in Spring Canyon (10 minutes’ drive) for more history – plus hiking paths – or wander under the ponderosa pine trees in Price Canyon Recreation Area (25 minutes) with its mountain biking trails and bouldering crags. You could also practise your shooting skills at the North Springs range (half an hour), get a glimpse of the waterfalls at Gordon Creek (20 minutes), and birdwatch in Emma Park (half an hour) too. Up for exploring further away? Head to the slot canyon at San Rafael Swell (an hour and 40 minutes) for wanders through a seriously spectacular geological feature, or go to 9 Mile Canyon (an hour and 55 minutes) for what’s believed to be the longest series of petroglyphs on the planet.
