  • Peaceful creekside park just off Highway 62 near Fort Klamath
  • A 10-minute drive from the Crater Lake National Park boundary
  • Family-friendly park with fishing, free canoes and snowshoe outings
Dust off your hiking boots, bag up your fishing kit, stash your mountain bike on the back of the car… and get set for a cracking collection of country pursuits at Crater Lake Resort, on 12 pretty creekside acres in the wildlife- and history-rich area of the Upper Klamath Basin, and close to the outdoor adventures of Crater Lake National Park. Hiking, birdwatching, biking, hunting, fly fishing and kayaking are all easily arranged from this handy setting a few minutes’ drive from Fort Klamath and just off Highway 62. The resort has plenty to do right on the grounds too: free canoes are provided for taking out onto the creek; a peaceful trail crosses the water via two bridges, and there's a massive grassy area with a playground and swing set for the kids to play while the adults sit by a campfire in the communal area. Free snowshoe expeditions are organised frequently in winter; in summer the folk here can instead point you towards fine fishing areas, birdwatching hotspots and scenic hiking trails. Fresh air and outdoorsy days are in good supply around this Oregon park too, in a most handy spot nine miles from the boundary of stunning Crater Lake National Park and within a short drive of several other natural attractions – Jackson Kimball State Park, Winema National Forest and Upper Klamath Lake are among the areas that await exploring those that (sensibly) select a lengthy stay. Need a beer at the end of a long day of exploring? The park’s shop is stocked with drinks, snacks and other essentials, and its staff make the effort to be open in all weathers throughout the year. Barbecues, picnic tables and firepits are scattered around for alfresco meals; other facilities include a playground, an outdoor games space and free wifi.

Local attractions

Fishing folk will be in their element here: not only is there easy-access fishing at the park, it's also within easy reach of other top spots including the Williamson river and Klamath Lake, 20 minutes away. If you’d like to see the next generation of swimmers, stop by at the Klamath fish hatchery, five minutes away. If it’s hikes you’ve got your eye on, Crater Lake National Park has mile upon mile for you to tramp, taking in forests, flower meadows and craggy peaks; the highlight is of course the lake itself – the deepest in the whole of the USA. Trolley rides, scenic drives, guided hikes and snowshoe tours are among the ways to get out and about, o you can even take a dip in the lake if you’re feeling brave (it's very chilly…) Another popular pick for intrepid types is the Crater Lake ZipLine half an hour away, with some excellent views to be had from the mile and a half of aerial course. For something a little more leisurely, head to Train Mountain (10 minutes away) to see the world’s largest model railway.
