  • BIPOC-friendly camping on a simple wilderness site in New Mexico
  • An hour’s drive to Zuni Pueblo and to fishing in Quemado Lake
  • Woodland walks on a back-to-basics site, hammocks to hire; fresh eggs
BIPOC-, cannabis- and pet-friendly Mujeres Valley Campground is a 20-acre sustainable campsite tucked away in the West Mountains of New Mexico between Zuni Pueblo and Acoma Pueblo. The site is surrounded by over 40 acres of land homesteaded by the owners, and is crossed by a maze of walkways outlined by volcanic rocks. The property is dotted with interesting finds like ancient pottery, crystals and volcanic mounds that reveal spectacular views of the surrounding landscapes. You can set up among the trees or overlooking a re-wilding pond, and spend days enjoying hikes in the private hills and experiencing the beauty of nature all around you. After exploring, hire a hammock to snooze quietly among the ancient trees, or watch the moon rise on clear nights. Fresh eggs can be provided by the owners for breakfast, and if you have a craving for a burger, or need some petrol before heading back out on the road, Quemado (35 minutes’ drive) is your closest stop, with restaurants and two petrol stations.

Local attractions

If you ever feel the need to leave this peaceful site, head on out to the forest-fringed Quemado Lake (an hour’s drive) to fish for trout and bass, or go exploring on rough tracks around Mangas Mountain (two hours) for spectacular views of surrounding hills and mesas. With picnic areas, a choice of walking trails and the chance to take photos in the wild landscape, El Malpais National Conservation Area (40 minutes) has dramatic cliffs and canyons as well as features like La Ventana Natural Arch and various dedicated wilderness areas. There are woodland tracks through Gila National Forest (two hours) with statuesque waterfalls to discover, as well as ancient dwellings carved deep into sandstone cliffs. Stop by Zuni Pueblo (an hour) to see the silverware and pottery for which the Zuni people are famous, and drive on to see another extraordinary masterpiece, the sprawling land art completed by Walter De Maria in 1977 – visit “The Lightning Field” (35 minutes) at dusk or sunrise to see it at its best.
