What a prime part of New Mexico this is. Golden Eagle RV Park is in the southern Rocky Mountains, 8,300 feet high up, and within a few minutes' walk of Eagle Lake and its state park for boating, wildlife watching, hiking, and fishing for rainbow trout and kokanee salmon. A couple of hours north of Santa Fe and three hours from Albuquerque, Golden Eagle is on north-central New Mexico's Highway 64, one of the roads on the Trail of the Ancients Scenic Byway. Hiking and 4x4 trails, spectacular scenery and ancient sites are all around this region: if you don't care to travel far for a wander and a wildlife watch, an easy trail leads from Eagle Nest to Eagle Nest Lake State Park, where you can lounge on a bench overlooking the lake to spy eagles and hawks among stunning sunsets. Guided tours to local attractions, craft classes and live entertainment are arranged by the park team too; events like art shows, beer benefits, craft and car shows with music and local crafts and vendors run on most summer weekends. Food is a priority here, says the park team, who lay on free coffee all day, a chuckwagon for breakfast and weekly themed events or potluck dinners. Also at the park is a gift shop with art and jewellery from over 100 Native American artists based throughout the USA, with a variety of rocks, gems, minerals and fossils from around the world. Golden Eagle is family owned and run, with excellent amenities including a modern shower and bathroom, and a spotless clubhouse with a coin-operated laundry as well as TV, puzzles and games.

Local attractions

This is active adventuring land: ziplining, mountain biking, horse riding and climbing are all available locally, as well as more sedate pursuits such as gold mining or riding the nearby ski lifts at Angel Fire. The area's also internationally acclaimed for ancient art and archaeology, around the regional towns and the spectacular sights along the Trail of the Ancients Scenic Byway. Taos 45 minutes' drive away is a tiptop spot to investigate the culture and history of New Mexico's Native Americans, Spanish settlers and the old Wild West. Taos Pueblo, about a mile outside town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You could also take a look at Cimarron (35 minutes), once a major city on the Santa Fe Trail and now with a historic district and Old Town to potter around.
