  • Tree-covered park in downtown Pahrump, surrounded by Nevada desert
  • Five minutes’ walk to the Pahrump Nugget and Gold Town casinos
  • All-weather swimming pool, hot tub and daily activities programme
With a heated pool (covered by a retractable enclosure) for swims whatever the weather, an indoor spa and a well-equipped exercise room, you might find yourself becoming rather partial to Preferred RV Resort… This park in the downtown area of Pahrump, amid the desert landscapes of Nevada and within five minutes’ walk of casinos, shops and restaurants, is also in a pretty nifty location for days out. It’s in an excellent spot midway between the stunning natural landscapes of Death Valley National Park and the equally dazzling manmade vistas of Las Vegas, an hour and 15 minutes’ drive from both. If you’re staying put, activities scheduled on site include crafting in the wood shop, painting stained glass and honing sewing skills. Have a look at the full activities calendar on arrival for all the things to do – you may well find poker, potlucks and pinochle, or perhaps bingo, breakfasts and billiards tournaments (plus daily pool-based activities to work off the effects of some of those tasty meals…). Here for the high rolling? The Pahrump Nugget and Gold Town casinos are less than a five-minute walk for table games, slot machines and sports betting. If you’re on a winning streak, treat your travel partners to a meal at one of the restaurants or 24-hour diners here. Not won a fistful of dollars today? Forage for fodder at supermarket (less than five minutes’ drive away), then prep and cook it in one of the barbecue areas while smaller travellers check out the playground.

Local attractions

So… are you feeling lucky? If you’re up for it, there are gambling games galore at the Pahrump Nugget and Gold Town casinos, both five minutes’ walk away. Got something a bit bigger in mind? It’s around an hour and 10 minutes’ drive to mighty Las Vegas, where you can rub shoulders with real high rollers, take in a show or just gawp at the glittering constructions around town. If you feel lucky enough just looking at gorgeous scenery, head over to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (40 minutes’ drive) for hikes or drives taking in desert views, crimson cliffs and seasonal waterfalls. The natural arches and rock formations at Valley of Fire State Park (two hours) make it another good place for a hike, and the mind-bogglingly enormous Hoover Dam (an hour and 40 minutes) is worth a visit too. The real must-see though is Death Valley National Park (an hour and 15 minutes) – the country’s hottest, driest and lowest national park is packed with stunning views. If you’ve never been in a helicopter before, the huge landscapes here make it a fine place to take your first flight.

Liked: We just stayed for one night. Got in just after dark, but the hookups were easy to work with in the dark. I can’t remember the name of the lady at the registration gate, but she is awesome. She found us a great, centrally located pull-through space. Told us everything we needed to know, even anticipated that we needed to know about the jacuzzi (it was a long, hard drive through Nevada). Walked to the Nugget Casino in mere minutes! Would stay again — and longer — in the future.
