  • Wild camping site with dog-friendly pitches on the Santa Fe Trail
  • A 45-minute drive to Trinidad Lake State Park; an hour to Vogel Canyon
  • Barbecues and firepits allowed; under 45 minutes’ drive to shops
Like a little action and a lot of scenery? Whether it’s hunting down dinosaur tracks and checking out the canyon in the Comanche National Grassland (an hour’s drive), boating and jet-skiing in Trinidad Lake State Park (45 minutes) or relishing the water of the Arkansas river (45 minutes), Aarondale won’t have you missing out on either. This dog-friendly Colorado site is in almost untouched wilderness and it’s pretty primitive here, as there are no toilets, electricity or running water on site. 19th-century people used to travel this way once upon a time, as the site is on the historic Santa Fe Trail – a sure bet for those of you who fancy a trail that combines solid scenery with historic remains and museums along the way showing how freight wagons used to trawl their way from state to state. It's an off-grid setup here, and you’ll be with adults only (and their dogs) but you should be aware that emergency facilities are few and far in between. It’s a real wildlife haven here, but of course, but that also means that you’ll be staying at your own risk – bears, wolves, mountain lions, badgers, rattle snakes and tarantulas live around here. There are places to get your shopping done under 45 minutes’ drive to each side of the site, so you’ll want to visit either Trinidad or La Junta for bits and pieces for a barbecue or firepit.

Local attractions

Once you’re all cosied into your new abode for the time being, you’ll likely be looking to pinpoint a few places on your map. And there's plenty to do, especially when it comes to hiking in Colorado’s big backyard. Perhaps fishing, biking, jet-skiing or boating in Trinidad Lake State Park (45 minutes’ drive)? Rental jet skis, boats and other water-based vehicles are for the taking at John Martin Reservoir (an hour and 35 minutes) too. The Comanche National Grassland is practically a playground… there are hiking trails, Native American rock drawings and biking courses around the sandstone Vogel Canyon (an hour); The Picket Wire Trail travels into canyonlands, a river valley and a historic district; and the Dinosaur Tracks (an hour and 20 minutes), is home to the largest dinosaur prints site in all of North America, thanks to thousands of tracks made by plant-eating dinosaurs. The hiking doesn’t have to end there, as Royal Gorge (two hours and 25 minutes), its bridge and especially scenic train ride are a road trip away. For those of you who are all about the heights and thrills, this place has a zipwire, sky-high coaster and rock climbing activities.
