  • Peaceful resort on the Cumberland Plateau, 20 minutes from Crossville
  • 15 minutes' drive from hiking trails in Cumberland Mountain State Park
  • Dog-friendly park with off-leash exercise area
Outdoorsy outings galore beckon for guests at Breckenridge Lake RV Campground, 20 minutes’ drive from the centre of Crossville, Tennessee and within easy reach of several of the state’s finest parks. Bring a hound along if you’ve got one; dogs are welcome to join you at this peaceful rural resort and on your outings to Cumberland Mountain State Park, Mount Roosevelt State Forest and Fall Creek Falls State Park, all of which are within 40 minutes or so. If you’ve not tired them out on the trails, they can run off leash at the secured dog park back at base. Not only is this Cumberland Plateau place a handy location for trotting off to all sorts of local attractions (not just parks but also Chattanooga, Nashville and the Mennonite community at Muddy Pond), it’s also a spot where you’ll benefit from cooling breezes to take the edge off the summer heat – one of the perks of an elevation of 1900 feet. Facilities at the resort include picnic tables, a covered picnic pavilion for outdoor eats on less clement days, and a shared firepit with free firewood. A central amenities block houses a laundry room, toilets and showers and is kept spotlessly clean; there’s also free wifi and a copy service for folks who need to keep up with admin. A couple of restaurants and fast food places are within a 15-minute drive if you’d like to eat out, and there’s plenty of choice up in Crossville.

Local attractions

So to those state parks… the nearest is Cumberland Mountain State Park (15 minutes’ drive), with hiking and bike trails, an 18-hole golf course and an open-air swimming pool. There’s also plenty of aquatic activity around the park’s Byrd Lake: fishing, boating, paddleboarding and kayaking are all popular picks. Birdwatchers will want to head to Mount Roosevelt State Forest (40 minutes); those who’d rather have a go at flying for themselves should strap in for a ride on the Canopy Challenge Course at Fall Creek Falls State Park (40 minutes). For something a little more relaxing, an hour’s drive takes you to Muddy Pond to meet the Mennonite community. And perhaps more relaxing again is a stroll around Stonehaus Winery (25 minutes away) for tours and tastings. Opt for town times instead if you like, with trips to Chattanooga (an hour and 20 minutes) or music hub Nashville (two hours).
