- Relaxed campsite off I-75, five minutes’ drive from Alachua, Florida
- A 15-minute drive to Poe Springs Park; Ginnie Springs 25 minutes
- Rescue animals, heated outdoor pool and a snacks shop at reception
A turn off I-75 at exit 399 brings you to Travelers Campground, five minutes’ drive from the shops and fast-food restaurants of Alachua. As the University of Florida is only 25 minutes’ drive away, this chilled spot is a firm favourite with students and their families, as well as Florida Gators football fans attending games.
With modern amenities, wifi and cable connections plus a friendly, helpful staff on hand 24/7, Travelers Campground is a spacious and well-designed park with easy thoroughfares for big RVs and a full electric hook-up service. Also on the campsite is a heated outdoor pool and sun terrace, and you can buy snacks and drinks from reception.
As well as welcoming campers, Travelers is also home to over a dozen rescue farm animals and exotic birds, including emus and macaws. While exploring about the place, keep an eye out for pigs, horses, donkeys, goats and cows as well as free-roaming chickens. Visit reception for animal fodder if you’d like to befriend any of them.
It’s no secret that the site owners love their animals, so there’s no need to leave your dogs at home. Bring them along to exercise in the spacious, shaded dog park – but please always make use of the dog bins conveniently placed across the park.

Local attractions
Florida’s Alachua county is where nature thrives. Adventure-junkies have five state parks and six popular swimming holes all less than a half-hour’s drive away. Kayak the pristine Ichetucknee River (half an hour’s drive), float on the turquoise waters of Ginnie Springs (25 minutes), or (hopefully) see wild-roaming bison and gigantic alligators at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park (half an hour).
Poe Springs Park (15 minutes) has lots of family-friendly facilities like fishing, canoeing, kayaking, tubing, swimming and hiking, as well as ball courts and nature trails. There are brilliant birding opportunities at San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park (10 minutes), as well as off-road biking and hiking trails through hardwood forest to impressive limestone outcrops.
In Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park (20 minutes), follow out-and-back trails to a miniature rain forest and a steep-sided limestone sinkhole, while a day spent in Newnans Lake State Forest (half an hour) may reward with sightings of bald eagles, wild turkeys and gopher tortoises.
