  • Part of a sustainable living community in the Catskill Mountains
  • A 10-minute drive to Livingston Manor; 40 minutes to Woodstock site
  • Firepits and picnic tables provided; educational sessions available
Come to the Catskills for the nature, the hikes and the outdoor activities; leave with a new appreciation of sustainable living… Pitches at Camp Haven are in 50 acres of gorgeous New York countryside that’s part of a sustainable living and self-care educational community. The non-profit community that lives here is focused on healthy living and caring for the natural environment, and guests are requested to respect that approach while staying here. And if you’d like to carry on the good work into your wider life, for an extra fee you can sign up to engage with community projects and learn about living a more sustainable life (use the special requests box to signal your interest in these sessions). In keeping with the community’s general ethos, this is a ‘leave-no-trace’ site, and pets must be well-behaved and on a leash at all times. You’ll need to bring along most of your own kit, but each pitch has a wood-chip pad, a firepit and a picnic table and there are various bits and pieces to rent (including air mattresses, toilet buckets and the like). Boxes of firewood can be bought on site too. For food it’s a 10-minute drive to Livingston Manor, and first port of call should be the community’s own organic plant-based market and kitchen (also in town are a couple of places to eat, a couple more food shops and two craft breweries). Getting out and about locally is all about the outdoors – this is an area where you can easily fill many a day hiking, kayaking and fishing, or simply sitting quietly to take in the views and sunsets…

Local attractions

Off into the outdoors you go, but what’s first in your sights? The hiking loop around the Round Top Trail (10 minutes' drive), going deep into the Delaware Wild Forest (20 minutes) for streams and waterfalls or mucking into mountain biking and hiking trails in Walnut Mountain Park (25 minutes)? Outdoor activities stretch far and wide around here, whether it’s walking and fishing in Willowemoc Wild Forest (half an hour) or taking a canoe or kayak out onto Neversink Reservoir (half an hour). For those of you who’d like some special company for your next trek, Buck Brook Alpacas (25 minutes) runs alpaca walks too. What of the olden times? For those of you who like to weave a little history into your holiday, the Roscoe O&W Railway Museum (20 minutes) will take you back to the beginning of the railway, while the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts (40 minutes), a museum at the site of Woodstock, will help you along in uncovering the history of the festival.
